We can spend ages on brainstorming good (or bad) ideas, but without testing them, they are just concepts without any evidence to prove that they would work. So, the question to ask is not “what’s your idea?” but “how have you tried to test it?”

The language used, the nomenclature, the association with technology, can make innovation the opposite of what it needs to be: it alienates and becomes inaccessible for those who want to be involved but just don’t know how.

For the future of UNHCR, and indeed the UN, we will need braver approaches. More certainty in what we’re doing. More courage in doing it.

Our challenge isn’t how to innovate more; our challenge is how to synthesise and understand more. Diversity and inclusion help us to do that. Fetishising technology does not.

Developed in a ‘bubble’, many apps for refugees duplicated existing well-used communication platforms. They didn’t take into account complex issues of trust, how information (+ rumors) spread, nor how rapidly the political and protection landscape changed.

Let’s learn from this - very often there’s not ‘an app for that’.
