In the Heian period from the 8th to the 12th centuries, there was no war in Japan, but there were many pandemics. Every time a pandemic happened, shrines were built to pray for pandemics to go away and never come again.

SIGdial's General Chair Tatsuya Kawahara adds:. "The banquet was held at Heian-jingu. It is modelled after the old palace of Kyoto. #Kyoto was initially called Heian-kyo. Heian means peace. It means not only there is no war, but also the state of the mind is peaceful. #SIGdial.

At the banquet, I asked the participants how many SIGDIAL conferences they had attended. About ten persons said more than five times, and only three said more than ten times: David, Kristiina, and Mikio Nakano. They gave a speech at the end of the banquet.

In the opening ceremony, I asked the participants if they were already studying/working on dialogue in 2000. Only ~10 persons raised their hands. I also pointed out that David Traum and Kristiina Jokinen were among the PC members in SIGDIAL 2000. Congratulations!. 🧵 2/3.
