The dumb part is that a lot of windturbines are turned of regulary. The percentage of renewables could be much higher if the german politicians would stop saving coal for no economical reason at all.
@TFaulersack
I think you'll find that wind turbines are only turned off when there is too much power. Grids require a substantial amount of rotating inertia to maintain stability & only coal, gas or nuclear can provide that
@25_cycle
Assuming that the forests are replanted, wood pellets will eventually repay their carbon debt. But considering the energy used to harvest, transport,chop up, process & dry, it will be a long time. Time we may not have.
@sideen_dan
Not only that but it has cost them a half a trillion to get there, and they have 2-3X the electricity costs we do in North America. The poor are really loving it I bet.
@sideen_dan
Yikes, hopefully there's no plan to use whale oil either. I don't think I've ever seen Germany green on the map and I check regularly. "Doing it right" without nuclear seems to take a long time, produce much pollution and demonstrably limits people's lives.
@sideen_dan
Haven’t heard of any reprieve for nuclear. Lost MWs may be supplied by coal if gas supply/cost doesn’t improve. Don’t know if nuclear can be ‘mothballed’ for saner minds or shut down is terminal.
