Q: would you pitch one editor at a time or send it to a few at the same time?.One at a time! Joseph has been in the situation where he's edited copy, got it ready to go, and got an email to say the piece had been picked up elsewhere. He wouldn't commission that person again.

'Think small.' . The Guardian gets hundreds of pitches a day. Pitch to less popular sections or newspapers, where editors may not get as many and give you a proper response. Build up experience. You will then be a safer bet than someone who has no experience.

Those who come from outside are more likely to feel set back by the rejections and give in. Don't! Stick with it. Believe in yourself.

What makes the difference between a successful journalist and someone who falls at the wayside is 'expectation'. If you come from a successful journalism family, or are middle class, If you get rejections, you'll believe that eventually you will get picked up. .

And finally, have the whole piece written. An editor will always have nagging doubts, even if they like the idea, that someone new to them can't write. If you can present a version, they can check it out straight away. They can also give feedback if they don't commission you.

Third, talk about how you will develop the story. Give more detail and angles you will go into. You may have a particular insight or understanding which will help build your connection to the story.

He often sees people complain about their ideas being stolen, but those ideas are so 'glaringly obvious' that people with more relevant experience have also come up with the, and they have been commissioned because they are more relevant to the story. .

Joseph says he had many 'identities' that he writes from, being black is just one of them - it could be writing as someone from Hull, or as a music journalists. The thing that matters is knowing your subject.

Q:Any advice for disabled, mature students trying to get into the media?.'Play to your strengths. I don't mean pigeon holing yourself. Write about the issues you know best. It might be being disabled or a mature student, but it might be being a northerner.'.Know your subject well.
