When I look back on those times, I often try to remember when is the last time we were all together running around in the backyard while our moms cooked. It's a reminder that you never know when you'll have that last 4th of July with family. Don't take time for granted.

As the youngest of my cousins (and of course a clumsy person in general), I was the litmus test for the level of fireworks we could have. Luckily, I didn't get hurt too often to ruin the fun.

While I am personally going through a rough divorce from the United States, the 4th of July in the past was a holiday where most of my family came together. My cousins/aunts would be in town, and my grandfather would wake us up at sunrise to see the hot air balloons fly above.

One of the biggest gaps in computational biology software is still documentation. At the very least, use AI to create a first draft of a README you can review and expand. There’s no longer an excuse for poor project documentation.

One of the biggest use cases for LLM agents or tools like copilot and cursor SHOULD be improving computational biology documentation. The ability of cursor AI in particular to scan a repository and attempt to write a readme is powerful.

After all I’ve gone through during my phd, it hasnt been until the last 6-8 months that I’m able to enjoy the process and find ways to thrive. It’s been really nice to just be “in” a flow and work through computational problems. Leaving the lab at 9 pm. Couldn’t be happier.

One of the most helpful things I've learned as a graduate student is that your school's librarians are absolutely invaluable resources. Instead of me having to personally buy ebooks, I've been able to get a ton of programming, genetics/genomics, etc. books via @uablibraries!.

I feel like if I’m not growing, if I’m not changing, if I’m not adding new things to my life and new ways of thinking to my worldview, then what am I here for?. That’s the core of my life - the pursuit of knowledge even if it challenges my belief system.

A typical day of being a graduate student:. Eating slices of pizza from the box you got at a seminar while a 2 liter mountain dew (also from the seminar) sits on your desk. I'm using a box of kleenex tissues as napkins. Good day though.

These are the mini-stressors of academic research. Obviously, everything is on fire right now, but a white board in a meeting room shouldn't be too much of an ask.

To me, this is what sets apart environments at universities. No, I don't need or want a fancy art piece or modern piece of furniture. Functionally sound spaces that allow me to do science, have a decent lunch, and take care of my basic needs should be the bare minimum.

It doesn't mean I'd rather be at UMMC. I wouldn't. At UAB, the opportunities to do translational research especially in computational biology are higher in number and diversity. But the simple things - like basic necessities or niceties in buildings - just pale in comparison.

I love my lab, and in general, I've been quite happy with my access to knowledge, resources (in terms of learning, science), and general ease of the environment at @uabmedicine @UABgsga. But as a student/researcher, I feel significantly less cared for than I did at @UMMCnews.
