Lecturer in Conservation Science and Lead of @BrisZooSociety Cameroon Conservation Programme focused on Kordofan giraffe 🦒 also a fan of rhinos 🦏
Bristol, England
Joined September 2010
It was fantastic to witness how the @philincon_ field and ranger teams are working to protect the forest. Myself & @RicardoLFig were very lucky to join them on a recent survey, where we recorded four Critically Endangered Visayan warty pigs on a camera trap! 🐗🐗🐗🐗
Last month, our conservation team visited the Philippines to catch up with project partners and local communities 🌍 While there, they visited rangers in the rainforest, and held workshops about the reintroduction of endangered wildlife 🐦 Read more: https://t.co/vGcmlrMTwG

Such a small population is particularly susceptible to the effects of poaching and without further intervention may go locally extinct

Our new study finds as few as 27 Kordofan giraffe may remain in Cameroon's Bénoué National Park - you can read the full article here https://t.co/mMEFR9PeOc
Over the last 3 years, our conservation team and researchers from @BristolUni have used camera traps to learn how many Critically Endangered Kordofan giraffe are living within Cameroon’s Bénoué National Park. (1/2)

BZS & @SekakohOrg are busy conducting the first large-scale camera trap survey of Bénoué National Park's threatened fauna. Working with its Conservation Service, we have now received our first images from the field! More details in the blogpost below - https://t.co/RiIkXcsVQR
Our conservation team has been working with Bénoué National Park to survey its wildlife and help direct anti-poaching patrols 📸 Initial camera trap images show at least 30 mammal species to be present, including western hartebeest and African forest buffalo!

Headline stat is "Having accounted for other intervention effects, total dehorning was estimated to reduce poaching by 75% from pre-dehorning levels" although it notes that further research is needed

Interesting to see some empirical evidence showing that dehorning rhinos can reduce poaching rates. Despite its wide-spread practise there have been few studies that have looked at its success as a conservation measure -

Temminck's pangolins are a rare & elusive species that are highly threatened by the illegal wildlife trade. However, far fewer people know that electric fences are also a cause of death. This study led by @LeaStracq highlights the need for mitigations & improved fence monitoring
The first paper from my PhD and my first first-author paper ever is out! 🎉 https://t.co/irtL5ybQmr

Some eye-opening results from our population modelling of Kordofan giraffe in Cameroon's Bénoué National Park. It really highlights the urgency and importance of conservation work within one of the few areas that this subspecies still roams @BrisZooSociety
Without intervention, the poaching of two Critically Endangered Kordofan giraffes per year could result in local extinction in just 15 years. Our @Bristol_Vets partnered with @BrisZooSociety to understand the threat these incredible animals are facing.🦒 👉 https://t.co/H9qSzWTas6
