Hey @grok , let’s educate this space a little. Which one of these is a necessity and which is a luxury? Data prices and DSTV subscription, and tell me why? Also, if you are the Minister for Communication, which one will you dedicate your time to for affordability, and why?

Please DSTV is a necessity. Many Ghanaians can’t survive without it. That was the argument made by a lot of them when I expressed the fact that it’s a luxurious service. Please clarify for us @grok

How can a government company which has a monopoly on the supply of electricity in Ghana arbitrarily propose a 225% increase in their distribution service charge. “They are disrespecting Ghanaians and our minister will fight on our behalf”
ECG proposes 225% increase in its Distribution Service Charge for 2025 to 2029 tariff period; requests charge is raised from 19 pesewas to 61.8 pesewas per kilowatt-hour #JoyNews

A bank has five numbers on their website, I called all five of them. No response. A ministry has three numbers on their website. I called all three of them. No response A private business has two numbers on their website. I called both numbers. No response. Ghana, smh.

If there’s any lesson from the Comms Minister–DSTV saga, it’s that Ghana urgently needs a competition law. I made this point earlier when the saga began and that buga buga may not be the way to go. As usual, people were up in arms. Over a month later, the desired outcome of a 30%

I said the exact thing. DSTV are well advised. Ghana does not have legal backing (Consumer Protection Act) to push for such measures and the draft Bill has been in and out of the pipeline many times. DSTV will have every right to sue hence the need for stakeholder engagement.

What is fair and objective is an application of the Wednesbury principle. You must take all things into consideration or if aggrieved they have a right to sue you in the high court to cancel your order. This is the rule of administrative fairness.

You cannot as a public admin dictate to a private org the price they should impose. You don’t dictate how much they should pay workers or how much profit they make. You can’t dictate how much they should pay shareholders. You can only call for fair objective standards. Art 23

His duty as a minister is not to make empty threats and later try and find a law to back it up. They’ve sat daft that you’re advocating for Ghanaians doesn’t mean you’re applying the law. The law is the law Article 23 of the constitution says you must be a fair admin body.
@seth_doe22 I think we can someway somehow find a law to back it up cause that is his duty as the minister.

Right now if I say it amounts to media interference to dictate what a private media company should post and how many times they should repeat it Ghanaians will cry foul lol. It’s today that I also learnt that “DSTV is a necessity for Ghanaians”
DStv can repeat a show 3 times yet charges about 1,000 cedis for premium — Nana Yaa Jantuah, Presidential Staffer #Primeinsights

The minister published to Ghanaians that DSTV agreed to reduce prices. DSTV stood firmly on their rights and refuted that promise calling for the law to be applied: the law of reasonable administrative fairness which means give them the right fair negotiations. Article 23.

Was the firm directive of the minister and his promise to Ghanaians, an establishment of a stakeholder committee or rather a suspension of their license because they’re disrespecting Ghanaians? Maybe I got it wrong.

Seth Doe: “you can’t unilaterally threaten to suspend them if they don’t reduce their prices by 30%. That’s unreasonable and unfair. Objective assessment needed or they will sue.” Twitter 😡😡 Sam George: “we will suspend them tomorrow” Sam George: “a committee will evaluate”

Telling them to reduce by 30% based on the dollar rate and economic factors alone or the fact that they’re a monopoly isn’t enough. All things must be taken into consideration and they have the right to stand their ground. The minister will be forced to keep extending grace
