So, instead of dreaming of “the new Nokia” the future was considered to be in hundreds or thousands of tech startups. There was plenty of advice and resources available for new companies with big ambitions.

Nokia had made a huge contribution to Finland’s economy, but we had just learned that nothing lasts forever.

This time, in 2010's, there was new energy and enthusiasm, as Nokia / Microsoft were shutting down their phone business, and there was a lot of skilled workforce available.

The whole Finlayson district in Tampere is reminiscent of the time of the Industrial Revolution in the end of the 19th century, when factories raised funding and made their Initial Public Offerings (IPO’s), and when technically skilled people were highly valued.

The Protomo incubator was located in New Factory, an iconic place for the new startup hype, in the premises of and old factory.

Today, there’s again some new promise in reimbursement models for health apps. The leaders are the German DiGA model, the French Pecan initiative, and the Belgian health app pyramid structure. But all of them are in the early stages too, and each with their own challenges.

Of the companies mentioned in the blog, Quattro Folia’s product legacy is being maintained by @ProWellnessLtd. @DottliHealth has ceased to exist. And it seems I had forgotten to mention MyHealthWay as an early peer, they had also shut down their activities by that time.

The need for the solutions is there, but a structure for purchasing them does not seem to be.

The first five years were really tough. And to be honest, the five years after that haven’t been easy either. As written in that last blog entry, “there just is no viable and sustainable business model for self care apps in today’s healthcare industry.”

The last published blog entry on our blog is from 2018, five years after the initial product launch.

The blog is no longer part of Sensotrend’s website, though, and is no longer actively maintained.
