This write up pretty much reminds you to take a step back and actually see how far you’ve come. Love it.

That’s when you stop being a “glorified note-taker” [devs can be rude😹] and start being the glue that holds the whole thing together.

So the next time you think of your “irresponsible, slow, arrogant” dev. Internally curse them for a moment 😹. But also remember it’s your job to make their chaos make sense, and remind them they’re building something bigger than bug fixes.

We are the bridge between logic and emotion for every great product and the people necessary for bringing it to life. We do not have the time to complain yet, not while the world is still questioning the importance and necessity of our role.

One would rather have daily stand-ups to keep him accountable, the other needs to meet just once a week. Different people, different communication styles. It’s your responsibility as their product manager to understand their respective styles, and work better with them.

But the reality of it is, these are different human beings with different communication styles. One dev locks in better at night, the other daytime. One would understand complex terms better when explained via call, the other needs it in doc format so he can revisit it.

Now the matching principle states that . “Successful communication requires recognising what kind of communication is occurring and then matching one another”. Now if you’re of the opinion that my devs should already know their responsibilities and act accordingly, you’re right.

Developers are the hardest people to work with in my experience. They procrastinate, use “currently working on it” to wound you, and still deliver features with bugs. At least that’s been my opinion for the longest time. Moments like these I recall the matching principle.
