24th St and Thomas @cvspharmacy in Phoenix gave me Novavax last night no questions asked. It's absolute Calvinball out therr right now but hey, shot in arm! 💪

classic public health problem. @cvspharmacy in downtown Phoenix HAS Novavax but won't use it because they say it's not authorized yet. CDC authorized it August 30. CDC website is insufficient proof. So they're just... not vaccinating folks even tho the vaccine is in the store.

I think more healthcare should be like vet care. Your best friends grab you, you’re spooked for a minute, then you wake up later very relaxed having received the healthcare and you didn’t dread it and nobody sends you a bill because you’re a cat with no money

@commercedems it's currently a wild patchwork of what airlines do/don't allow. a single "if you can document you have a contagious disease that is a risk to others in a travel setting, you get a voucher to rebook" is simple, straightforward, and (i think) relatively low-burden to the airlines

if we want good public health behavior, we can't hand people a solid reason to do the exact opposite. a unified public health-based medical policy for air travel seems like exactly the sort of thing the @commercedems might be interested in.

the more i think about this, the worse it gets. we know air travel has a significant role in the spread of disease, both known and emerging. yet the financial incentives are to get on a plane anyway, contradicting every bit of public health science.

doing the right thing in this instance will cost me about $300 total, but more importantly, everyone who flies and cares about their health should know that your policies are encouraging people to get on planes while they're sick.

@Allegiant yes, it's a lab confirmed case, yes, i offered to provide proof, and no, i won't be outside the cdc-recommended quarantine window. i'm trying to do the right thing and not expose other passengers.

hey @Allegiant i tested + for covid today, flight on sunday. i contacted your team & they told me you do not have a medical policy (at all ) & therefore they would not rebook or offer credit. that.... incentives me to get on a plane w/a contagious disease. that's... insane.

The number of disaster and climate-adjacent academics who are craving to have more direct community and policy impact is incredible. Seems like a real opportunity for institutional reforms at universities.

“What do hazard mitigation plans accomplish?” Is an urgent question that far too few people are asking.

The cost of a heat wave is not just hospitalizations and deaths - it’s months of missed prescriptions , not being able to afford food or school supplies, all the knock on effects of squeezing to afford a bill this size. 😬

Just got off the phone with @SRPconnect about my outrageous electric bill. The customer service agent said lots of people calling in about their $600 bills. 🤯 So much for my “SRP energy star” home.

Being forced to work without company-provided, ice cold water in hand at all times shouldn’t be allowed in the state of AZ. I don’t care if you’re a cabin cleaner, a roofer, or an office worker. This heat will gitcha, as my grandma would say.

Linda is a cabin cleaner at @PHXSkyHarbor. She regularly works in temperatures approaching 100 degrees and isn't allowed water. She has to drink bottles left behind by passengers. While airlines brag about record profits. This is the reality for workers.

Phoenix will become the first major city in American history to average over 100°F for an entire month. The city has experienced a virtually continuous heatwave since the beginning of July, with an average high of 114.1°F and an average low of 90.2°F. While Phoenix is used to
