Today I got a call from @tatacapital and thought, I should speak about it at least now. Think about it, weirdos!.

At least, you could arrange call center executives in the 22 official languages or pick a bilingual person who could use English as a link language to converse with non-Hindi-speaking geographies in India.

However, there are many native tongues that have fewer speakers or don't have a writing system, let alone ineligible dialects of Hindi.

but too many corporations are failing to do it. The Indian constitution recognizes 22 official languages, also known as "Scheduled Languages," in its 8th Schedule. These languages are used in government offices, courts, and other official functions.

But bulldozing Hindi into my regular conversations is not welcome at my end. In India, every state has its own language, and customers will be much happier and more likely to engage if they can interact with your company in their native tongue. It's really not that hard to do,.

Sadly, such intelligence is missing in call center executives. If they simply apologize and talk to me in broken English, I am fine with it. Or if they ask me permission to speak in Hindi first and then do it, I might still allow it.

They would again start explaining in Hindi. Look, a person with basic intelligence could pick up from the words Hindi, Malayalam, and English that I insist on speaking in either of the latter languages rather than the former.

When I hear the talk, my response will always be in Malayalam, obviously my mother tongue. I will say, "എനിക്കു ഹിന്ദി അറിയില്ല, ഒന്നുകിൽ മലയാളത്തിൽ പറയൂ, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ പറയൂ," which translates to 'Hey, I don't know Hindi, either you switch to Malayalam or to English.'.

When it came to your state, your politicians could bend that policy and stick with only Hindi and English, so you never bothered to at least try to study any South Indian languages. That is the privilege you had, and you make that an excuse to speak in Hindi to a South Indian.

Hey, I could follow Hindi a little bit because it was forced on us in schools through the three-language policy. But I am not that conversant in its grammar, where even inanimate objects have gender.

But even if I have booked a service call and I get to speak to an executive, the same happens, which is all the more frustrating.

Yet, it's like you think the whole country speaks Hindi when you set up your call centers! I randomly get calls from some big names even though I have registered for DND. When I say hello, they abruptly start speaking in Hindi.

Why do so many Indian corporations fail to localize (L10n) their call centers? When you publish print ads, you do it in every local language; when you broadcast radio ads, you do it in every state's language.
