Only thing that comes to mind is to cut down on web3 api access costs by not letting you use the app?

Amen. It's like web2 sites' pop-ups demanding email, etc. before you can even see the site, but much worse because now your whole personal bank is theirs to view (and maybe steal from)

With what I'm building with ChainStory (think web3 resume/profile), we only ask the user to sign if they are taking an action to claim the page of their wallet address .
