Of his run last night to grab children and bring them to safety, Fernando Tatis Jr. said he was protecting family. His actual family is not here. He considers his teammates’ family his.
“There were little kids. I felt like somebody needed to go get them.”
In the midst of confusion & then some fear, my lasting image from tonight will be looking down on the field to see 22-year-old Fernando Tatis Jr. emerging from clubhouse and sprinting down the 3B line to grab his family & pull them to safety.
I thought I admired the kid before.
Jake Peavy will throw out the first pitch before Game 4 of the NLDS on Saturday — on the night Joe Musgrove starts for the Padres.
Musgrove wears No. 44 in honor of Peavy.
On Saturday, Peavy will wear Musgrove’s No. 44 jersey.
Speaking just now about Fernando Tatis Jr., A.J. Preller said:
"I think what we need to get to is a point in time where we trust. ... Over the course of the last six or seven months I think that's been something that we haven't really been able to have."
The Padres advancing to the NLDS gets Fernando Tatis Jr. to Mexico City in '23.
Had they lost, his return would have been May 1. Now his 80-game suspension will be up no later than April 26. He could play April 27 in Chicago. The Padres play the Giants April 29-30 in Mexico City.
The Padres were in it to win it with Trea Turner. His signing with Phillies was a major letdown internally.
They thought their offer could have gotten it done.
"It was deafening. Honestly, when we took the lead it was like an avalanche. And at that point in time, it really felt like there was no way we were going to lose."
— Bob Melvin on the seventh inning.
Juan Soto will wear No. 22 with the Padres. He has secured the number from Nick Martinez.
The number was significant to Martinez, but Soto is buying Martinez “something” and “If we win the World Series, I’ll probably forget all about it.”
Martinez will wear 21.
Andy Green went to the mound in the third inning to remove Chris Paddack and asked Eric Hosmer where he’d be Sunday.
Hosmer said in the field behind Paddack.
That’s how Paddack found out he’d made the big leagues.
Manny Machado will be with the Padres for 11 more years.
He and the team have agreed on a new 11-year deal worth $350 million. Not an extension.
@JeffPassan
first reported agreement.
This is shortly after Fernando Tatis Jr. had been called out on strikes in the fifth inning. Manny Machado could be heard yelling, “It’s not (expletive) about you.”
I had never written an obituary about a friend. I don’t use that term lightly. A reporter rarely ends up truly being friends with someone they cover. But Peter was a special man.
God bless his beautiful family.
Padres Chairman Peter Seidler dies at 63
Not surprising, but Elias confirms that Fernando Tatis and Fernando Tatis Jr. are the first father and son to each record a multi-homer game at the same ballpark on the same calendar date.
They're really booing now.
Manny Machado just lined a home run to left field.
Emma Stone and Dave McCary are dancing in the front row.
Max Scherzer, who allowed four home runs, is done for the night.
Juan Soto, who was cheered by many here last week, was just booed vociferously when his name was announced at Dodger Stadium.
Wasn't as loud as the boos for Manny Machado, but you could still hear the hurt.
And it happened:
From Padres: Fernando Tatis Jr. had successful surgery today to repair the labrum in his left shoulder. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.
The Padres’ starter for Game 1 of their Wild Card series was named National League Player of the Month for September.
Yu Darvish had a 1.85 ERA and 0.80 WHIP in six starts.
Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth are Gold Glove Award finalists.
Jurickson Profar and Trent Grisham probably will be.
Manny Machado is not a Gold Glove Award finalist.
This should make you feel weird about the Gold Glove Award.
Wil Myers & Daniel Vogelbach were yelling back and forth during the inning.
After retiring Mets in order, Joe Musgrove looked back toward Buck Showalter and cupped his ear.
Musgrove has allowed one hit through six innings. His spin is up a bit. He might be a little amped.
Blake Snell is 4th in NL in ERA (2.85), 2nd in strikeouts (132) & No.1 in BA against (.200).
There are 15 starting pitchers in MLB with an ERA of 3.09 or lower. Snell is the only one who has not been named to his league’s All-Star roster.
Tonight’s attendance 45,137.
Highest attendance since 2015 and highest attendance ever in a postseason game at Petco Park, besting the 45,093 vs Cardinals in 2005.
They are playing a long highlight video of the Dodgers’ ring ceremony that was held before their home opener. One Padres player has been sitting in dugout watching the whole thing.
Wil Myers.
That was one of the most intense baseball games you will see.
And the result assured two games at Petco Park that should have an incredible atmosphere.
Manny Machado will make $13 million a year for the next three seasons, $21 mil in ‘26 and $35 million/year for duration of 11-yr deal.
$45 mil signing bonus spread out over 11 yrs
This distribution would seem to greatly help Padres with payroll flexibility the next couple years.
Austin Nola pumped his fist. Josh Hader pumped his first. Ha-Seong Kim pumped his first. Manny Machado pumped his fist and then blew a bubble.
Padres win 2-1.
They are one victory from the NLCS.
In a pregame meeting to inform the team of Fernando Tatis Jr.'s suspension, it was stressed by AJ Preller and Bob Melvin that they haven't had Tatis all season and their goal remains to win the World Series.
FWIW, Trent Grisham just hit a 3-run homer. Padres up 7-0 on Nats in 5th
Jake Cronenworth just gave the bat he used in BP to a young boy wearing a Padres jersey and a Michigan cap. The boy’s family responded by serenading Cronenworth with the Michigan fight song.
Really, all four of them just started belting it out.
The Swagg Chain made its 2022 debut in the clubhouse postgame.
Some Padres had said there needed to be the right big moment for it to return.
“Couldn’t have been bigger,” Manny Machado said of Jorge Alfaro’s walk-off homer.
There was disagreement about which of the Elite security guys ran faster when they chased down the guy who ran on the field during last night’s game. So Nabil Crismatt, Pete Summerville and Ruben Niebla staged a race to decide.
That was pretty cool.
Jorge Alfaro was sincerely touched when he heard that he and Nabil Crismatt were the first Columbian battery to start a game in the major leagues. It meant a lot to him.
The Padres have a lot of things going on. Juan Soto, Willson Contreras among them. Maybe eight or nine more things, someone just said.
Trading Eric Hosmer is not one of those things.
Yu Darvish uses an interpreter for press conferences. But asked about this pitch, he answered in English:
“I thought it was a strike. But we won. So who cares?”
The home run that Max Muncy hit to put the Dodgers up 2-1 in the second inning is partly courtesy of home plate umpire Chris Segal, who four pitches earlier missed what should have been strike three about as badly as a call could be missed.
I just left the clubhouse and about 100 Padres employees lined the hallway with signs welcoming a young boy in the Make-A-Wish program. As he walked by, they clapped.
Nothing I’m gonna see the rest of today is going to be that cool.
It appears to have been as bad as the Padres thought.
Of the 17 calls home plate umpire Doug Eddings missed in tonight's game, 15 went against the Padres.
(This is based on strike zone tracker in play-by-play.)
If all goes according to plan, Fernando Tatis Jr. will begin a rehab assignment this weekend.
He is supposed to take live BP today.
Padres still taking it day-to-day. But expectation is Tatis is in minor league games this weeken.
