Lieutenant Ottley led his platoon to destroy a German machine gun that was causing great loss. He was shot in the neck, fell, got up again and led his men on. He died three days later, a month short of his 19th birthday. He remains the youngest recipient of the DSO.
A letter from Gdsm Withers to Lieutenant and Quartermaster Archer. It shows what impact an instructor can have. “Give 110%” “don’t give them an inch” are just a few of the sayings Gdsm Withers remembers. Well worth a read.
