Harry Reid was an extremely unusual Democratic congressional leader, in that he decided 77 was old enough to retire

According to Harry Reid, Rep. Walter Baring, a Democrat from Nevada, told him on the night of JFK's assassination that Kennedy had been leading America down the path to communism and "It was probably a good thing that he was murdered"

@schwarz My dad retired at 62 and at 80 has had 18 years of doing whatever he wants. I plan to retire at 60. Retiring and dying five years later like Reid seems nuts to me.

@Johngcole I once was talking to a friend about why these people cling to power for so long, and asked what it was about power that was so great. She said: "Well, whatever it is, you and I will never know."

@schwarz That rubber band thing hit him in the eye and he gave up. Sad.

@schwarz He was exercising, one of those bands snapped, it hit him in the eye, then he fell and broke some ribs. I don't think he would have retired if he hadn't fucked himself up so badly. The pancreatic cancer got him much later afterwards.

@schwarz True, but only after he literally put his eye out. Otherwise, he said he would've run again. So, half credit.

@schwarz @MatthewSitman It’s astonishing they let Obama through in his 50s. By the current standard, he’d be mildly promising young up and comer.

@schwarz Memory serves, his support in Vegas was tenuous. He retired about as much as Anthony Scaramucci resigned.
