Happy Cyber Monday! The over 70 data centers in Georgia are hard at work providing the infrastructure needed to support the massive surge in online shopping today. However, this essential infrastructure does come with environmental costs.

Our folks over at the Ogeechee Riverkeeper are taking a momentous stand to protect the Floridan Aquifer, prioritizing its use for the human, agricultural, and ecological needs of Ogeechee River communities. This effort challenges the exploitation of this vital water resource

With recent rainfall, this has resulted in the contamination of local waterways. The Savannah Riverkeeper is advising all individuals to thoroughly wash their hands and any exposed skin after coming into contact with the affected waterways.

Thanks to the vigilance of a concerned citizen, we have been made aware of one of the ongoing consequences of Hurricane Helene. The storm caused significant damage to thousands of sewer lines, leading to sewage spills throughout the Savannah River basin.

Please think before you litter. Recycle your plastics, glass, and aluminum, and make sure your trash is properly secured in a waste receptacle to prevent it from being blown into our waterways. Together, we can keep our Savannah River Basin healthy. #savriverkeeper #savannah

This week, while clearing out several trash booms in Savannah, GA with @OspreyInitiative we were stunned by the sheer volume of litter we discovered. From Styrofoam to-go cups and glass bottles to discarded shoes, the banks were littered with debris.

Rain replenishes our waterways and creates movement, while a lack of rain causes stagnation. Stagnant waterways are breeding grounds for algal blooms and mosquitoes, and a lack of flowing water will allow pollutants and pathogens to accumulate while reducing the amount

As you probably have noticed, the #Savannahriver Basin hasn’t gotten any rain since #HurricaneHelene . While this can help with cleanup and recovery efforts, a lack of rain can have major ramifications on our waterways.
