Here are simulated sediment erosion/deposition & flood maps for a 1000-yr flood based on records 1992-2017, similar to a 25-yr max.mid-future flood, show sedimentation reduces channel capacity, leading to overtopping & worsening flooding during extreme events downstream in Nakkhu

Furthermore, #Nakkhu, a large southern tributary of #Bagmati, the riverbed aggradation by sedimentation near its downstream confluence n in flat terrain seems to have reduced channel capacity. Sediment from upstream activities such as quarries n landslides is the next challenge.

Sept 27, 2024, #Kathmandu recorded its highest historic rainfall in 54 yrs, more in south up to 323 mm in just 24 hrs. The #extreme #climate with urban expansion by #floodplain #encroachment , resulted in significant losses and highlighted #urgent need for future precautions.
