The Venn diagram of people attacking Jack Monroe and those attacking trans people is a circle. Why? Because Jack’s non-binary? Because hostility is the default mode of these people? It must be so exhausting to maintain that level of toxicity
Don’t let anyone tell you that books aren’t life-savers. I’ve lost count of the times they’ve rescued me from loneliness, depression, anxiety. Books have been my best friends, and it’s through books I’ve met my truest RL friends. Books are the BEST 📚❤️
Happy Birthday to Mary Shelley, whose mind was so fertile and frightening that ever since she wrote Frankenstein, men have been tying themselves in knots to try and prove she didn't, couldn't or shouldn't have written it. My kind of woman
Christmas 1974. Our mum made us dolls of ourselves and those dolls also has dolls of ourselves and that’s why this was the best Christmas ever and my mum rocks. Thanks for reading.

Shout-out to everyone looking with longing at writing retreats while living with the reality of never being able to get away, perhaps being a full-time carer or simply broke, having to squeeze writing into the tight corners of your life, snatching odd hours here and there 💪🖋️💪
@chelseabwrites
Congratulations on your book! PD James once turned up to a bookshop event only to find the shop in darkness and a notice on the door saying, ‘Tonight’s event cancelled due to lack of interest’. Every writer I know has a story like this, and more so since Covid. Take heart ❤️
As

One of the clearest signs of a nasty personality is treating serving staff badly. There is a party on the table across from mine who have been imitating the poor young waiter's NI accent right in front of him. I am *this* close to telling them what I think of them.

Please don't track down & tag authors on social media for the sole purpose of sneering at us for promoting our books. It's our job. It pays our bills, and feeds our kids. If you think it ought to be beneath us, then you don't understand the first thing about writing

Hands up who else untucks the duvet from the bed and puts all the many cushions and extra pillows on the floor as soon as you enter the hotel room you’ve booked for the night? I mean, it’s the first thing you do, right?

Just learnt that Philip Larkin used to cheer himself up by gazing into the mirror and announcing, 'I am Mrs de Winter now,' in the manner of Joan Fontaine.
LGBA doesn't just whip up hatred against trans people (although that is clearly its primary objective). It encourages the abuse of anyone in the gay community who dares to step outside the razor-wired perimeter of its narrow definition of LGB.

Dear
@GWRHelp
please can you tell me how to make a formal complaint against the two members of staff at your help desk at Paddington Station on 21 Oct at 6.20pm who jeered at me and my autistic son for asking if we could be put on an earlier train as my son was so overwhelmed?
Please can we bring back the slow burn for books, TV, film etc? I feel this frantic push for thrills and twists is killing the art of involvement. And I really struggle to remember those kinds of stories/shows whereas the slow burners stay with me
Imagine if Saga Vanecek who pulled the pre-Viking sword from the lake in Sweden teamed up with Owl Girl. Women would never again have to fear for the state of the world ⚔️🦉💪
Well it’s
#AutisticPrideDay
and this is long overdue but here I am saying publicly for the first time that I’m autistic because visibility matters.
Love to all my ND friends and allies
I'm enjoying this uplift trend in publishing but it's important to acknowledge how many readers seek out darkness in books because it reflects their reality & speaks to their experience. Dark fiction has its own light to shed. Done well, darkness in novels can comfort, even heal
Imagine those raging, impotent, racist bullies going home to their wives and kids after urinating on statues and punching and spitting at the police. How many women and children will get abused tonight because they're had such a great day out?
Imagine going into
@Waterstones
& stamping your foot because your book isn’t on the shelves. I’m not saying we’ve not all been tempted to do this, from time to time, but imagine actually doing it. And then telling everyone you’d done it. I’m dying inside just at the thought of it
Thank you to
@valmcdermid
for using her platform to speak out against the growing trend towards weaponising trans identity
The vitriol in response is one reason why so many of us keep quiet; our quietness being seized upon as ‘proof’ few women believe

Special shout-out to the readers, book bloggers and reviewers who share their love for books, host blog tours, enthuse, cheer lead and generally make authors feel better during what can be an excruciating period pre- and post-publication 🙏⭐️🍸🎉

This is an outright lie and should be ashamed of yourself for spreading it. Mr Sutcliffe knows exactly what he did to lose his job and it was repeatedly bullying a child in his care over a long period of time and then leaking his pack of lies to the press.
Teenager was accepted into a language school in Kyoto. Which means we're spending January in Japan. ❄️🎎
I may be somewhat excited about this. Normal service will be resumed, in February.
Anti-depressants are trending so it's a good time to say there's no shame in taking medication to stay well.
Anyone who tells you otherwise, who advocates 'simple healthy living' or 'positive attitude' as an entire MH solution is a dangerous idiot.
Stay well, everyone 🧡💙
Two years ago, women’s dominance of the genre was estimated as 80%. Men were adopting female pseudonyms to keep up. That’s 80% of crime books written by women. Versus 23% in this list. (Source …)
Suggest we all report Alison Pearson for inciting violence and endangering individuals who had the temerity to ask the police to help when they heard a woman in danger

do think twice before frowning at the mum of the kid having a meltdown in the supermarket, or the teenager hiding under a hoodie and headphones. My poor kid was once criticised LOUDLY by a horrid woman who thought it was fine to comment on his clothes 1/2
Dear Quentin Tarantino, if the daughter of Bruce Lee says the way you depicted her father in your film is untrue and offensive then perhaps it would be decent *not* to double down on the arrogance and offensiveness. Just a thought
It's 446 days since I came out as autistic on here. Since then I've written & had published my first novel with an openly ND protagonist (Black Thorn) & talked about my autism here & there, often awkwardly.
This is a Thank You to everyone who's shown understanding & support 💙
Giving 1 star reviews to books that haven’t been released yet takes a special kind of meanness. Not my own book but one which I absolutely adored and it makes me miserable that people can be so vicious

wouldn't it be amazing if there was a festival for audiobooks where authors and narrators/actors chatted about the different experience of bringing characters to life, and readers lobbed questions at us? 📢
I'm going out on a limb to suggest people's reasons for missing an NHS appointment (illness, disability, train strikes caused by Government failures) are more credible and excusable than whatever excuses they've been offering up for missing COBRA meetings and crucial hearings

What I find most upsetting about the Dan Mallory story is how many good, kind, decent people are defending him in the belief he is suffering from mental health problems when there is no proof this is any truer than the rest of his stories, and plenty of evidence that it is not
It's a strange thing, writing. Yes, it's wonderful, difficult, painful, magical. And readers are a unique part of that. Because here's the thing: we write to connect to people. A book without readers isn't a book, it's just a howl into the dark ...

there is a fight in a library, involving a hardback book, which I cannot even begin to describe other than to say it was like Book Ballet and, at the end of the fight, Keanu returns the book to its correct space on the library shelf and I am broken and DONE
Taking a moment to say thank goodness the vast VAST majority of writers are so supportive of one another, especially those starting out on their publishing journeys. Paying it forward is one of the joys of being a published author 🙏❤️💪👏⭐️
There are people who believe they have to cut you down to size while you're still growing. People who decide your excitement and joy at finally achieving a life-long goal is nothing more than arrogance and must be put in its place. Don't listen to these people. They're wrong
Dear all, life is complicated and rarely easy but right at this moment I have so much confidence that it will get better. Me and the kid are in a good place, the best we’ve been for years, and the sun is shining. I hope it’s shining for you too ☀️🔆🌻
One of the best things about writing crime fiction is knowing how very smart our readers are, and respecting that. Authors who sneer at their readers, or simply pretend they don’t exist, are missing out on one of the most joyful aspects of writing

Very little fills me with as much cold dread as hearing of a writer losing their work because of computer failure or software whackery, so here's my top tip: At the end of every writing session, email your latest draft to yourself. Also serves as a handy record of recent changes
One of the many things I love about my chosen genre is the generosity of authors at the top of the heap towards new writers. My timeline is full of famous names plugging the new kids on the block. Crime writers are the kindest people 🖤🖤

As seen on BBC News, this is a print at home postcard to pop through letterboxes for your neighbours who might be self-isolating. Becky Watts from Falmouth is the creator but she’s keen for it to be widely used
Bullying does horrible harm. I wish all the bullies who’d ever targeted my kid could sit with me and talk about the distress and despair they’ve caused, much of it done casually, to win a laugh from friends or hide their own self-doubt. Forgotten in an instant but not by my kid.
A seasonal reminder if you see a child ‘behaving badly’ while Christmas shopping, it isn’t necessarily a tantrum. Autistic kids struggle with the bombardment of shiny decorations, music, scented sprays etc that make shops a sensory nightmare right now. Be patient and kind. Thx
