i’m sorry, but there is something fundamentally wrong with using someone’s name to report their gender and race/ethnicity. The statement mentions not accounting for gender diverse people (although it still doesn’t feel good???), but also sorting names into genders/races is not ok.
Option 3: the full statement, the gold standard. If you care about these issues in other aspects of your professional life, bring your pubs into the fold and do this! OK thanks for reading, and reply with your own statements in other journals to keep the discussion going!

@AcademicChatter 7/7 If you are like me, you will identify 🚩 and not care because you CAN push through them, but YOU DO NOT HAVE TO. You deserve to be in a lab that nurtures your research, professional, and social development. You CAN be a PhD student and work in a healthy environment!!.

@AcademicChatter 6/7 talk about professional development. A good PI should help you reach your goals, no matter what they are! Its a 🚩 if they have reservations about you taking time from research to teach or do industry experience, or if they are pushing you to follow in their footsteps.

@AcademicChatter 5/7 if a professor only talks about their research in their first few meetings, this is also a big 🚩! You should both be working to find if there is a good fit between you, which requires questions from both sides.

@AcademicChatter 4/7 rotate if you can! I did not but would have likely found that A. I would have been just as interested in many different research topics and B. that mentorship and other interpersonal things are important. Don't worry about the time not doing your goal research, it wont matter.

@AcademicChatter 3/7 talk to past students. Its a 🚩 if a prof isn't on good terms with any previous students or if they talk bad about past students. Ask the same qs, but also ask about support during the defense process and leaving. Ask about their relationship when talking about leaving.

@AcademicChatter 2.5/7 see if you can attend a lab meeting!! Try to observe how the PI interacts with students in real time. it would be especially helpful if it was a students' practice presentation.

@AcademicChatter 2/7 talk to current students! I did not, because I was shy and didn't know what to ask. Ask about mentorship style, expectations for time in lab versus work from home, how often they meet, how they're giving feedback. Try to see if there is anything they're trying not to say.

Now that its almost time that first year #PhD students are picking labs, I would like to share some advice that I wished I knew/listened that could have saved me from a lot of pain. (A thread). @AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter.
