I confess I don't read a ton of fiction, but Olga has always been one of my most beloved voices. And as I shared with her, I consider her the poet and narrator for the kind of "fugitive democracy" that I practice.

My father had a choice, leave for himself or stay for his principles in defence of others who shared his beliefs, facing certain arrest. Of course he was afraid but the right choice was clear, and as he promised all those years ago he wasn’t going to be intimidated by fear.

The inaugural editorial on the 20th of June 1995 of Apple daily, two years before the U.K. handed the city back to China, read: “Are we not afraid of changes after 1997? We are afraid. But we refuse to be intimidated by fear.” That’s a motto my father and his colleagues lived by.

He would always say that information is choice and choice is freedom. Having escaped communist China as a young boy, he understood how fear was used to control people, landing in Hong Kong at 12, he understood the power of truth in liberating one from those fears.

Last week, we recognized Jimmy Lai's courageous stand against the Beijing and Hong Kong repressive regimes with the Axel Springer Freedom Foundation's Award for Courage. Sebastian, Jimmy's son, received the award on his behalf and spoke poignantly and powerfully about his dad.
