Durhal also supports Santiago-Romero’s truck ordinance. Durhal said Detroit needs strategic plan for industrial areas. “If you look at streets in neighborhoods, that infrastructure is crumbling because those trucks are going through them. I’ve seen them park in the neighborhood.”.

Haashiim once owned a trucking company, he says his son now operates. He says he would create truck lanes to allow traffic flow to increase. Detroit needs a modern truck stop so they don’t have to park in places that infringe on communities. He says he wouldn’t allow it.

Jenkins says the city should increase fees for truck traffic that have negative health impacts for community members.

On pollution, environmental issues: Sheffield says truck traffic should not travel through residential neighborhoods. She mentioned her support of an ordinance introduced by Gabriela Santiago-Romero that would attempt to reduce just that.

Mary Sheffield says as mayor, she would ensure Detroit police would not work with ICE, and that no resources are given to the federal agency. She said she would ensure transparency for police officers who racially profile residents.

Perkins says DPD working with ICE or racially profiling residents is unacceptable. He says he would use DPD to monitor ICE, instead of working with them to deport residents.

On ICE: Jenkins says she would provide more funding for immigration attorneys. “DPD should not help ICE.”.

Haashiim said he “would be the first one that they arrest to stand up for your rights in the city of Detroit.”.

On immigration enforcement: Durhal says too many residents are living in fear: “Our police department needs to be focused on keeping our residents safe. Not cooperating or doing the job of ICE, they have their own job to do.”.

Durhal offers Rodriguez his personal number and access to his office to assist in any way: “There are folks who wanted to call the city, but because of the fear of what is happening right now (with ICE) they didn’t… That is a breakdown in our trust as government.”.

Haashiim says we need to focus on revenue so situations like Rodriguez’s doesn’t happen. “Our elected officials must show more love and empathy to our people.”.
