Former OUSD Boardmember 2020-24, now leaving that post as well as this toxic app.
Oakland
Joined March 2014
As I leave office I am also leaving Twitter, permanently. I did once before but then came back because it was a place journalists could easily find my public statements. But it’s now such a $&!@ show that there’s no excuse to stay. You can find me on the other apps!

Like I wonder if someone could come up with a term for ppl whose families have been here even longer like in the 4000 year+ range, compared to which 400 years vs 4 years feels like rounding error. We could call them Indigenous, Native Americans, First Peoples? Or something.
Being a "Heritage American" entitles you to absolutely nothing because that is a term people made up on the Internet like last week

RT if Democrats should REFUSE TO SEAT Mike Johnson next Congress for as many days as he refuses to seat Rep-Elect Adelita Grijalva.

Very moving to see Patrice Berry and Rachel Latta, both of whom I successfully begged (and backed) to run, sworn in as our two new board members. They are in for a bumpy ride and I am so, so grateful to them for their service to the children and educators of Oakland! 3/3

I got to sit in the well of council chambers as outgoing president with a front-row seat for all of the proceedings, but as an outgoing board member I was appropriately silent the whole time! After four years on the board, it was a strange relief to be a bystander again. 2/3

2025 is gonna be a humdinger of a year—yesterday it really started for Council & Board, with Jenkins voted in as interim mayor, Gallo as council president pro tem, Kaplan as interim councilmember for District 2, & Brouhard & Bachelor as @ousdnews school board president & VP. 1/3

...the Mayor until the election in Apr) and president pro tem, who will go first. After that, you can join our meeting on Zoom at https://t.co/fhu1FSUd95 (Council chambers will be packed). I will be attending as outgoing president. Good luck to the new Board and president! 2/2

The Oakland City Charter requires the Board of Education to meet today (the Monday after January 2) at 11:00 at City Hall, 1 Frank Ogawa Plaza, which is called the 'organizational meeting.' The City Council meets at the same time to elect their president (who will become ... 1/2

Today is my last day on the @ousdnews Board of Ed. As I leave I'd like to address some misinformation about the 'fiscal cliff' that OUSD faces right now due to the expiration of many one-time funds, including COVID relief dollars. Oakland Unified is like Wile E. Coyote... 1/5

It’s an honor to serve as the Congresswoman for California’s 12th Congressional District, following in the footsteps of Barbara Lee and Ron Dellums. I promise to fight for you every day and be a voice for those not often heard. We are ready to get to work.

Interestingly I met the Stanford math professor mentioned in the article, Brian Conrad, when we were high school juniors ourselves, at a math enrichment program at Ohio State University in the 1980's that was a life-changing experience for me! 3/3

—but it still happens too rarely in OUSD. As the article points out, too much energy is spent on fighting the math wars and not enough on seeking innovative ways to expose students to more enriching and real-world math content while preserving rigor. 2/3

Great article on the Algebra Wars shared with me by a high-up @ousdnews administrator. I was just talking to a junior at one of our HSs who is taking Calculus. OUSD is experimenting with acceleration to enable more students to reach that course in HS— 1/3 https://t.co/1h3shyv1QN

All Board members worked hard to study the documents and participate in all the hearings. The last ones, held held last night, were scheduled so that the current board could complete the process, since it would be inappropriate to have a different board make the decision... 4/5
