Central to their argument: the black sites and associated horrors were NOT an aberration, and the anti-torture norm in the context of the US has NOT been restored. An important point, which we all need to remember.

The @AfghanUKAFInq has published letters regarding the MoD’s failure to meet evidential deadlines and allocate adequate resources: “This is unacceptable.” The MoD’s proposals to remedy this will still delay the Inquiry’s hearings by at least 7-8 months. https://t.co/38cga8VsJs

Key question still outstanding - what role did the UK play in Mr al-Hawsawi's torture? The Investigatory Powers Tribunal has now opened an investigation - let's see what comes of it.... (the pesky truth can't hide forever) @harryfoxdavies @REDRESSTrust

A key judgment at the ECtHR today - Lithuania complicit in the CIA's kidnap, secret detention and torture of Mr al-Hawsawi (still held at Guantanamo, >20yrs after his disappearance into global torture prog). In the face of ongoing govt secrecy/denial, this is a v imp victory.

But the project's ambition is far wider than this: we are building a home for primary material for researchers interested in understanding the nature, evolution and impact of UK national security practices - especially where these remain hidden from public view.

Our first phase will focus on bringing together material related to UK counterterrorism operations overseas, including British involvement in torture and extrajudicial killings since 2001.
