Everyone is overcomplicating this debate and dancing around actual drivers of behavior. The West reproduced a specific pattern of hegemonic domination because for centuries it found violent global exploitation to be a profitable enterprise. This math just doesn’t work for China.
I find Dave's research fascinating — and I really appreciated Tanner's critique. As a non-expert in East Asian history, it's fascinating to see the seams and specific points of disagreement

Forcing Google to sell Chrome is just stupid. We already have plenty of alternatives, like Firefox and Chromium. All the value in Chrome is that Google is incentivized to CONTINUE to invest heavily in moving the web forward. It's a classic wealth v riches misunderstanding.
