I founded and edited Pitchfork from ‘96 to ‘19. Now I'm writing a book about it! (Also manage artists at xtra/credit and run the weekly playlist What's Good.)
From the folks who lived it: Slate's oral history of
@Pitchfork
documents the indie bible's rise & fall from its goofball origins & buzz-building heydey to its eventual corporatization and— well, whatever it is now. 40 interviews, 12,000 words, 0.0 fucks.
Extremely saddened by the news that Condé Nast has chosen to restructure Pitchfork and lay off so much of its staff, including some who've been integral to its operations for many years/decades. Sending love to everyone affected and hoping for the best for its future.
So excited to share today that I’m writing a book! It’s called WEIRD ERA and it chronicles Pitchfork and indie music’s ascent into mainstream pop culture from the mid-90s onward. Can't wait to share it with you!
Lou Ottens, inventor of the cassette tape, has left the planet. Let’s take this moment to respect all the joy his work brought into our lives, and also to enjoy the many poses he struck with his invention.
Hayden Silas Anhedönia inhabits a persona named Ethel Cain, but she makes music so eerily personal that the line between character and lived experience becomes utterly blurred. Her debut album is liable to turn her into pop music's next great obsession.
As a kid discovering underground music in early 90s Minneapolis, I was fortunate to have Low as a presence in my life at a formative time. Their shows were among the first I ever saw, and I saw them every chance I got (which was many) 1/
Big news today! I’m launching a newsletter for my weekly new music playlist, What’s Good— and over the next three days, I'll be using that space to break down 2021's best tracks to date. Follow and subscribe here:
Still a shocking number of people in music writing off this space because it’s easier to make jokes on the timeline than do the work to recognize how the value of music + art is shifting. It may seem non-intuitive, and yes there’s a learning curve, but this is v good for artists

Everything But The Girl's first new song in 24 years is the best thing out this week and already a lock for year-end lists. It retains all the duo's signatures: Ben Watt's sophisticated beat-making and Tracey Thorn's elegant vocals on the precipice of love-wrecked surrender.
Few producers have crafted sounds so original they instantly opened up whole new territories for other artists. SOPHIE forever changed the terrain. What an enormously tragic loss.
Happy to announce that the new weekly playlist I'm curating for Pitchfork's Spotify and Apple Music accounts has launched today! I'll be updating it every Tuesday with new music spanning all genres. Check it out...
Could Ethel Cain be the next Weeknd? With all the dark sensuality, hedonism, and melodic touches of 'House of Balloons,' her new track, "Gibson Girl," suggests she's on course to become one of this year's most significant new breakout artists.
billy woods is radically restructuring rap’s relationship with language, deploying knotty narratives that can take several listens to solve. After 20 years in the game, he’s now in his own orbit— and 'Aethiopes' is his victory lap from the moon.
Prince spoke on posthumous performances during his life, this defied his wishes in death. No tribute is paid by dishonoring his will. He deserves so much better.
Sam Gendel is putting out the most fascinating ambient and loop-based music this year. He’s pulling new age, jazz and vaporwave bits into richly expressive, hypnotic textures that are deeply soulful but also sound a little like piped-in mall music from the early 90s. I love it.
Big day for
@Pitchfork
, we've launched a new section— our first since The Pitch. Congrats to editor
@timmhotep
and staff writer
@Al_Peeair
who've worked tirelessly these past few months to bring it to life.
Blessed to have followed LOW from local band status in 1993 Minnesota (when they were kind enough to step up as Pitchfork’s first-ever interview subjects) into 2021, where they’ve gone so deep in their own world, they’ve transcended all conceivable limits. God-level music.

Japanese Breakfast really grasps how the closing track of an album is as essential as the last scene of a film or the final paragraph of a novel. The one on her new record is pure catharsis. That last chord resonates for miles.
Staggeringly gifted songwriter and performer, mocked and reviled for her activism in an era of sightlessness, complicated soul, blinding inspiration, and impossible force of nature. The will of this woman! Dearly loved her, the music she gave us, and all she stood for.

Imagine jazz or vocal pop or the entire art of 70s film soundtracks or the whole of 70/80s/90s funk, disco and R&B without Quincy. These two records alone!

Yachty's new album is about to deliver some major music fest moments this year. "We Saw the Sun," "Lost Vision," and "The Ride" all hit wildly hard. Best rap-to-psych-rock transition I've heard. Instant win.
Kate Bush, lover of the absurd and theatrical, has been gearing up in costume to perform quirky songs on British television her entire adult life. This honestly tracks.
Can't believe we live in a world where it's entirely possible Kate Bush is on The Masked Singer UK.
I felt a fool suggesting it earlier but now I'm convinced that's her voice and diction..
Plus the last clue about liking to be heard and not seen... Catherine. Bush.

. It's intriguing to hear the different ways artists have been using talk to stretch out their music. 1/
That was my first interview. I was frazzled and had no idea what I was doing, but she and Alan were patient and kind and generous with their time, and gave such thoughtful answers to my amateur questions. 3/

Madlib’s new album makes me wonder how many other great records he has lying around that no one’s puzzled together. Such a deep, satisfying listen. Also tough to pull out one or two cuts to represent the whole. Most of them flow together better than they stand alone.
I didn’t know that would be the last time I’d see Mimi play, but she played and sang her heart out, and imparted one of my favorite festival moments ever, a true full-circle. 5/
I just bought an “album of background noise” that “contains no music” and is “literally just the noisy fuzzed out tape loop of a fog horn” so I guess I’m in that category now.

Reminded by the new Radiohead thing that ‘Amnesiac’ may have the most perfectly stuck landing of their albums. “Like Spinning Plates” > “Life in a Glasshouse” hasn’t lost an ounce of its sorcery.
