The concept holds true outside of the biblical/religious structure as well. When we willingly do wrong it sets us against what is right and makes us blind, figuratively speaking.

I'd mentioned this to the kids recently during a Bible study, explaining that sin pushes us away from God until we realize and admit we are wrong in what we're doing and repent. Came across it yesterday here in Psalm 36.
