Just realized that the 1.44 MB floppy disk was actually 1.41 MB. The actual disk size was 1,474,560 bytes. They counted a kilobyte as 1024 bytes, so it was 1,440 kB. But then they counted a "megabyte" as 1000 kB. I'm literally shaking.

So basically start at the end. First write the whole system, stubbing everything out, then dive into whichever subsystem is most interesting or critical. Both of these phases will uncover flaws in how you're thinking about the system, and it's good to catch those early.
