Among hundreds laid off from The Washington Post yesterday were dozens of international employees not eligible for protection under the Guild and being axed under less favorable terms, w/ massive logistical challenges ahead. Please help support them: https://t.co/6mtDC8u6Sn

They say you haven’t lived until you’ve been laid off. I’ve now lived once. Gutted to see so many coworkers lose their jobs at the Post today. If you know anyone who’s hiring a politics/culture/magazine writer with a law degree who also speaks Spanish: https://t.co/MihsQMsEly

I was laid off today as part of The Post's job cuts. I don't know what the future holds, but it was the honor of a lifetime to cover D.C.'s local communities over the past 6 years. If you're hiring or want to reach out, DM me or email: mbricesaddler(@)gmail(dot)com

Picked up my notebook this morning — full of notes from a recent reporting trip — and got hit with another wave of grief over all the stories that now won't be told. I'm looking for work, preferably in Kyiv, should anyone need a dogged, empathetic reporter. DM/email.

It’s an astounding strategy to think that making your product much smaller—gutting the foreign and local desks; eliminating books and sports coverage; laying off some of the best writers, editors, photographers—will get *more* people to buy it.
New memo from WaPo exec editor Matt Murray as the newsroom reels from this morning’s round of cuts, which I’m told impacted up to a third of the workforce

So many incredible reporters let go in the name of profitability by a man who could lose millions a day and feel nothing. Meanwhile, every layoff means stories that won’t be told, information that won’t be known, and history that won’t be documented. That’ll be Bezos’ legacy.
A staggering statement from former Washington Post editor Marty Baron: "This ranks among the darkest days in the history of one of the world's greatest news organizations."

As the Post lost its primacy, it dismantled its bundle of news & fun, cutting comics, closing bureaus, killing Sun. mags, etc. but still spiraled down. The NYT went the other way, growing the bundle, and now leads the pack. Cutting sport and foreign is the wrong strategy.

Dueling MOUs. Visits from Xi and Trump. A Chinese-backed mine near a U.S.-favored refinery. Far more direct intervention than either side is publicizing. The rare earths showdown comes to Malaysia. A dispatch from Kuala Lumpur with @cdcshepherd: https://t.co/1A7cD40W8E

An Australian facility with Japanese backing is the most promising option for a rare earths refining hub outside China. But Beijing’s influence still looms large.

Once an auto underdog, the country’s current dominance of the global electric-vehicle market says a lot about why it brims with confidence in other fields.

Massive change is underway in the Sahel, where extremism is soaring; democracy declining & Russia rising. Over the past year, I've spoken to those shaping this history, including a jihadist; coup leader; mercenary & more. Our @washingtonpost series:

Russia is expanding its influence in Africa as democracy wanes, with military strongmen carrying out coups and the United States seeing its influence decline.
