either they don't own the rights (and were never paid), and the Elseviers charge the world extortionate amounts; or they actually paid the journals anything from $1000 to > $10000 to keep their rights, and can share as open access. Non-scientists find this unbelievable. 2/2.

John Fogerty (now 80) nods to Taylor Swift in his re-recording of his classic CCR songs, whose rights he lost decades ago and only regained in 2023. Who else lacks rights to their own work? Scientists. They are happy to freely share but. (1/2).

“I’m very excited about writing new songs and creating new music,” says the 80-year-old music legend, who is now on tour.

I am not an admirer of China but it is in both India's and China's interest to cooperate, trade, get access to each others' markets. As for human rights, the west has shown abundantly that they don't care about that and are happy to fund a genocide. So.

“Everybody feels guilty, but they don’t know exactly what they’re guilty of” -- well, exactly. We are all guilty of something. (I have no plans of travelling to the US; not while Trump is president, not for many years before that, not after.).

Horror stories about detainments at the border have also soured some from visiting during Trump’s second term

It was a pleasure to have known him (he spent a lot of time at IMSc in the 2000s). And "gregarious" is right, but also "profound". A unique person.
With P. P. Divakaran’s passing, we have lost a scholar of ancient Indian mathematics, a physicist, a gregarious colleague and a friend to many across science and mathematics. An academic of profound and rare intellectual breadth, he started as a theoretical physicist—where he

I wrote about the Sci-Hub case in 2020. Since then the case had stalled in Delhi High Court, until an interim ruling a couple of days ago. Time to write again, but meanwhile here's what I wrote 👇🏽.

No, a cow vigilante is someone who lynches Muslims and Dalits on suspicion of carrying beef, or carrying cattle for slaughter. No dog lover whom I know thinks dogs are holy or attacks others for not loving dogs.
The dog controversy reeks of class divide. When the man of the street goes around protecting cows in “unsophisticated” way, they are cow “vigilante” not “lover” or “humanitarian”. The double standards reek. Almost replicate of everything that’s been happening in the past decade.

Evelyn Waugh's "The Loved One", a satire on American funeral practices, was written in 1948; I always assumed the phrase was invented by him for his fictitious cemetery (memorial park?) "Whispering Glades". Perhaps it was and passed into common language?

It is not Trump alone who is destroying the "international rules-based order". It is the entire western world that is supporting Israel to the hilt in this while demanding developing countries stop dealing with Putin. Because Ukrainians are different from Palestinians, right?.

Stephen Colbert, in his alter ego as the rightwing blowhard Stephen Colbert, invented the word "truthiness" back in 2005, referring to the quality of feeling true (eg Bush's WMD claims) regardless of actual truth. And now his show is cancelled because he tells the actual truth.
