"Can you not at least put a sane woman among us?" The words came from a terrified patient inside the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island. She was begging the doctors, the nurses, anyone who would listen. She was talking about the new patient. The one who seemed too calm.

My use of “fishes” properly incensed some Telegraph readers. “IT MAKES YOU SOUND LIKE A CHILD!” But children have wonder, and they probably don’t reduce fishes to tonnage. So that’s fine with me. 🐡

By the way, I use the archaic plural “fishes” to convey the forgotten fact that fishes are individual sentient animals. They sing, they have friends, they make art. They are not just stocks and tonnage.

I am scared of swimming in the ocean. Not because of its creatures but because of its currents. But from the moment I was underwater, I was entranced. The crackles and pops, the fishes, even the sea urchins.

Crypto moves in cycles. Every bull run brings hype, and every bear market washes out the weak hands. The real money? It’s made in the quiet months—when nobody’s paying attention. Study, build, accumulate. By the time the hype returns, it’s already too late. What’s your

There was a swimming pool at the centre and my heart sank. But no. For the first dive, we walked onto the beach, past the grilled fish sellers and the young couples in their rented kissing tents, got in a boat, and went out to sea.

What didn’t go in the book: I first learned to dive in a Leeds swimming pool. I hated it. I got leg cramps, ear ache, I kept tipping over. I gave up, the scuba company went bust, so I started again on a reporting trip to Senegal.

So. I have a new book out. It features fishes, fishing and fishers. Fishwives, fishermen, fisheries observers. And, because it is me, facts like goldfish can drive and rabbits can’t get seasick.

Fascinating to hear Rose George (@rosegeorge3) & Hugo Tagholm (@HugoSAS) talking about Rose's book, Every Last Fish, at @BookFalmouth Festival. And good to hear a shout-out for #Falmouth's coral-like maerl beds, which provide essential habitat for many local species!

I've written today's Guardian Long Read, an account of the tragic sinking of the #ScandiesRose on the first day of 2020. Five hands lost, two survived.

So, @bostonmarathon , how many of your totally stupid non-binary category do you think will be biological men who can now use women's slower qualifying times to qualify? How is this fair to women? #SaveWomensSports

I have always resisted giving EM any money. But I get so few views on here since he bought it, I'm doing an experiment. I've given him £8 and let's see if anyone actually sees my posts now. (I realise this is ironic.)

.@nytimeshelp I am sick of the pop-ups on your site asking me to do a family upgrade. Not least as I'm a single childfree woman and my cat isn't interested. I've got pop-ups blocked but they still appear, constantly. How do I get rid of them?
