Does having a "rough" childhood affect important skills, and how do Egyptian vultures overcome it?. Just published in @CurrentBiology. If you like #raptors, #migration, #coservation, #reintroduction, #vultures, #movement #ecology, see below for details.

6/6 #BOUsci24 #SESH7.Our results offer valuable insights into animal #ecology and #conservation, demonstrating how conservation translocations can advance both fields. Many more questions are waiting to be answered using this platform, we just need to ask them.

5/6 #BOUsci24 #SESH7.Captive-reared vultures also showed reduced efficiency in their primary flight mode, spending more time soaring per meter progressed while gliding. But again, only during their 1st migration. Read more in our paper:

4/6 #BOUsci24 #SESH7 #ecology #conservation. Both groups migrated at the same time, using the same routes to the same destination, but captive-bred vultures took ~40% more time to complete their first migration. Amazingly, this difference disappeared by their 2nd migration!

3/6 #BOUsci24 #SESH7.We compared the effects of early-life (captive/wild) and acquired experiences on flight and migratory skills in Egyptian vultures. Important: we delayed the release of the captive birds, allowing 4-8 months to practice flight in the wild before 1st migration.

2/6 #BOUsci24 #SESH7 #ornithology .Conservation translocations are scientific experiments, where we can control variables affecting animals' experiences. This allows us to test hypotheses and make predictions valuable to both #conservation and #ecology.

1/6 #BOUsci24 #SESH7.Some see applied and fundamental science as a “short blanket dilemma” — covering one side leaves the other exposed. But others, including myself, believe we can do both effectively. Conservation translocations are one promising example of this synergy.

Why did the pelican (blue) land at the same place as the vulture (green)? Took me a few minutes to realize that this is just another incident of GPS-jamming that is becoming more and more problematic for wildlife research (and other things) around the world.

This is so cool - a black kite we tagged last year seems to want to be near humans (eventually landing in a damp site), but completely avoiding the city itself. #urbanecology #conservation #ecology #ornithology
