I would encourage anyone to come to New Orleans during Carnival at some point in their lives! There's so much good out there, but don't make it about you, don't be a vampire. Participate where you're welcome, observe/appreciate/respect when it's not clear. Just regular advice!

Mardi Gras is a really tough time for me because I fucking hate how Americans center themselves & their desires, and so parades, costuming, partying all feel like a million rugged individualist islands clawing to have the most fun. But there's beauty & community in it all.

What makes this city amazing isn't that you can have a good time. You can do that at any Chili's or Applebee's. It's the people, it's listening to the people and talking to the people and learning from the people, not extracting what you can from them.

One of my friends who lives here is a Burner and her friends all seem to emanate that vibe. It's the exact opposite of what I care about in life. I love New Orleans and hope to die here but I love a different New Orleans from most people.

Just realized people might view Mardi Gras & Burning Man as kinda similar things, of events where you can just be free to do whatever. The dissonance b/w how I view it having grown up here vs the Peter Pan vibes lots of ppl give off during Carnival is what exhausts me.
