Climate Chlimate. Serious challenges with awesome opportunities to build Solutions. avoid the Saviour Complex.

Space-based Solar can produce 40 times more power than on earth-based panels. Tech challenges, costs, launching, transmission, etc., are not trivial but many countries & private players are experimenting. Fusion may bring the sun to earth! Wait & watch!? https://t.co/RS6q8f4ed7

Coal needs to stay in the ground but there are countries still phasing-in coal. Some to continue & some. Phasing out. When? Energy market disruptions make coal the reliable backup even for Europe! New demand should be met with renewables for any hope! https://t.co/I4lAdPkqNa

We are still in a Carbon Trap. What if we continue to rely. On Fossil Fuels but capture & store emissions from them? Coal is unviable even then but Gas can be extracted and wells used for storage! Realistic or a dream scenario of Oil Companies? Choice? https://t.co/2k26bZPdbO

Nuclear power scares people but small reactors may come to your backyard! Dealing with radioactive waste, etc., are being thought of optimistically. Huge investments are going into Fusion as well but will it be just an unfulfilled technological promise? https://t.co/4VbmwbhY4Q

Rich, energy-secure/exposed countries (US, EU, Japan) are not leading Decarbonisation of Energy. Developing countries with emissions-intensive Energy sectors (India & China) are surging ahead. Ecosystem for renewables getting better. Economic Development! https://t.co/Hg3McRKpPo

Energy Transitions are local/regional. Depend on fossil fuel dependence, natural/financial resources, carbon intensity, etc., for Region-Specific Transition Strategies. International coordination to add up to local Energy Security & Global Mitigation. https://t.co/9452GmEhoi

A weak La Niña saves face for the gung-ho claimants. But when we say we are having many La Niñas, we should wonder about the changing baseline on which anomalies are computed. Background warming can make normal years look like La Niñas? Some kid can compute. NOAA gif here.

Business as usual will not work for Energy Transitions either. Policies must be adaptive, allow all technologies to play out, governments/markets must play together, risk-aware distribution/access, sustained public/private investments, etc. Nexus Synergy https://t.co/0odxFVNmMj

What can Energy sector do for Global Warming Target? Coal must go! Renewables, BECCS, CCS, Efficiency, Electrification & H2 is what IRENA recommends. Investments continue, deployments doing well, but 1.5C? CCS better scale up. 2030 is a critical timeline! https://t.co/XNK7hglMeC

Food systems must transition to sustainability & provide healthy food. But hunger, malnutrition & obesity persist. Transition must be inclusive. Local equity to global equitable access (physical, economic), quantity, quality. Food giants need be fair also https://t.co/wFGd0Pxm9B

South Korea has induced behavioural change - segregating food waste, composting, producing feed/energy, etc. But waste itself is not going down! Other countries can’t just adopt these solutions because of temperature or there’s enough land for landfill! https://t.co/4R50HVD7ys

Planet-Based diet restores biodiversity, reduces emissions, is synergistic with NDCs, etc. Same issues as with plant-based diets - behavioural/cultural dependence on meat. Separate carbon budget for food systems? Not easy but reducing Ag emissions needed https://t.co/RR0FX3hhQZ

Levels of industrialisation & food security, etc., define Food System types. Right Innovation for the Place & Impact ensure effective/efficient resource use. Healthy sustainable food with minimal emissions. Net Zero for food systems has to be brought in. https://t.co/KGdZWGGiQ0

Thunder seems to last forever in the mountains. Mighty Beas is dammed near Pandoh and joins the Sutlej-Beas water link. Caught a beautiful Valley Cloud near Sundar Nagar. Winding down the trip today. Back to the salt mines 😅

Discovered a lovely town I’d never heard of - Naggar. Some temples from the 11th-12th centuries. Worth hanging out here for couple of weeks.

Chota man in front of the Bara Shigri glacier. Best lunch on this trip was at this little dhaba in Koksar (Manali).
