Open-source models can help preserve privacy, but running them requires tremendous resources. Secure MPC methods allow third parties to run them for you without giving up privacy. In this thread, we discuss the evolution of SMPC for LLMs—and what Ritual is building to make.

LLMs can handle permuted states without issue (a property called ‘permutation-equivariance’). The authors of the prior works assume this makes them secure, thinking that a large hidden state (~1000+ elements) is impossible to unscramble—like finding one correct needle in a galaxy.

Or so the claim goes. In reality, these many permutation-based schemes are *not* secure. At Ritual, we’ve developed an attack that can recover the original states with nearly 100% accuracy—in linear time. Full details coming soon. Follow @ritualnet to stay tuned.
