Yes! Teachers are dehumanized in this race to get back to "normal" even though "normal" is what got us into this mess! A window is open for us to not only give Ts time to reflect/plan, but to do so with idea that maybe we need to change some really significant things about maths

@ilana_horn The problem is, you can only teach/do what is possible. I hope teachers making this kind of temporary shift will remind themselves that the lessons they are REALLY teaching are more important: lessons about doing what is doable, giving yourself grace. Students see that & value it

Yes, this is the one I meant to link to! You are each bringing together complementary ideas.
@RG1gal here's a link to my related (but not same) thread

Hermana, I'm back on, but still not so good at linking people's threads. So, perhaps you can join your thread to this one? I thought your ideas were so important.
@RG1gal hoping it means good things that you're back on this platform. always great to see you, even in virtual form โค๏ธ

Such important work!
We're kicking off our #ColorofWater speakers bureau initiative today and will be highlighting BIPOC water experts each week. Since it's also #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth , we're amplifying Indigenous voices (in November ... and always!) https://t.co/XmE8qxZ4e1

An important session to attend!
#BlackInMathWeek #BlackinMathEd Hey peeps, former math teacher (middle/high school) turned full-time PhD student in math education here. Below is my first poster session at #RUME2020 & a plug for my first conference presentation tonight. No pics of kids because itโs social media.

Good point! This speaks to what @Laurie_Rubel was saying in her thread--what kind of maths we should be showcasing. We need to keep interrogating forms/uses of maths and what they say about not only who maths is by/for but also what constitutes maths and its purpose in our world
So here's my point: yes, mathematics was front and center while the votes were being counted, and yes that's nice. But there is also an underlying narrative which conveyed the nature of mathematics and who mathematics is for.

Great thread!! I would add that in rethinking the current fuel source for math (fear) and replacing it with attachment, we find new ways to conceptualize life (the mathematics of love, joy, attachment, beauty, humility, kindness, etc).
14) I didn't summarize the thread, if anyone is still read this far, 14 tweets in. It's going to be a hard stretch over the coming months: it's going to require that we amp up our generosity, kindness, compassion, love & care for one another. peace out. #takebackmath

You are so talented! Thank you for the beautiful representation.
What kind of mathematics do we need now? @RG1gal at #NCTMVIRTUAL ... mathematics that enlarges through attachment and connection

Yes! If mathematics is the science of patterns, what does focusing on patterns help tell us about our gifts? And, are we remembering not to hoard those gifts? It's in the giving of gifts that we not only develop attachment to others, we grow!
What are your gifts and how do you give those in the world? What are our responsibilities to create spaces for change? How do we envision mathematics in the future? Great opening session Dr. @RG1gal #NCTMVIRTUAL @NCTM
