What an adventure!. In August 2015 I launched the idea for an adventure game where you become an art student and learn drawing alongside your character. I still have a long way to go, but it's still the right way. Thank you for following this epic journey!. Video below:.

Funny enough, when you apply a CRT filter, the halftone dither also gets darker due to the white pixels becoming dots with a circular area instead of a full square. Therefore, when doing pixel art for a CRT display, you do actually get closer to 50% gray.

In other words, open the image large and squint your eyes to see where the shades align.

Unfortunately, at least on macOS, when pictures are scaled, they get linearly interpolated (blended) in gamma space, not linear space as would be correct, so blending makes the halftone appear darker than it is if you're displaying it 1:1.

Just a random observation that the 50% halftone dither (black and white checkerboard) is halfway between black and white in linear space, which does not correspond to what we perceive as 50% gray. It's about 73% gray (with an sRGB display and pixel-perfect interpolation/scale).

First artwork of 2025. I tried to retain the expressiveness of my pixel paintings but also clean it up and make the clusters at the edges reminiscent of impressionistic painting where there are abstract blobs of color that slowly get representational towards the center.
