Today was my last day at
@OpenAI
.
20 months ago, I left the YC startup I founded to join the Codex team where I prototyped the first code interpreter demos. From there, I helped start the internal Human Data team, where we built tools to produce data for frontier efforts, one…
10 years of Github contributions:
- 2022-2023: OpenAI
- 2020-2022: YC w21 startup
- 2018-2020: Google Fonts
- 2016-2018: 18F
- 2013-2016: New Yorker
And a lot of side-projects and contracts spread out between.
Career update - I joined
@natfriedman
and
@danielgross
investing in startups.
I want to meet one-on-one with 1000s of founders this year, so please reach out if you are working on something great!
We lead rounds from seed to growth, investing between $1M and $100M at a time.
8 years ago, on 2/11/2015, I took my then girlfriend on our first date, to an award ceremony, for adding the paywall onto the
@NewYorker

Fast forward to today, we are married, but and I’m doing the same thing at a new place on a very different scale.
And we have a puppy.
I was testing new GPUs and thought I found an issue with the hardware.
Then I realized you can "hear" different model architectures.
When stress tests run at full capacity, the GPUs produce distinct rhythmic sounds and are distinguishable by frequency and step progression.
Note to software founders: create physical artifacts.
Print out weekly updates, collect old mocks, and file them for the future.
I got a lot of joy filing 170+ pages of weekly updates last weekend, knowing I can look back on them.
Physical artifact > decommissioned servers.
In the time I’ve worked at OpenAI, I’ve found it’s essence boils down to the tight-knit teams of exceptionally bright and industrious individuals who care about the work they are doing.

I was the only person in the car, and I sat in the back seat.
The trip was a fraction of the cost of a ride hailing app.

I want to extend my recent experience working in OpenAI and building A.I. products at scale to startups!
Working on something great or considering your next project? Please reach out! I'm here and would love to talk through your ideas and opportunities.

A fascinating connection I never thought about before: The postal system was instrumental in the abolishment of slavery, due to its "anonymous" nature which made it impossible to discriminate between letters from/to slaves.

Honestly, no. I'm a pretty bad programmer when compared to other people I know.
The things I'm good at is reaching a solution through brute force and then iterating, such that the final solution is manageable.
I always focused on things that were out of my comfort zone.
I had the fortune to first encounter Daniel online in 2018, through . I received a grant for tracking street art around the world, using computer vision and social media exhaust. When I started my last startup, Daniel was the first VC check I received,…

Tried
@JuneDotSo
over the weekend. I highly recommend it for app teams with app telemetry setup, but not enough time to properly analyze.
Compared to Amplitude, GA, or any other product analytics, it provides the most clear and easy to understand analysis I've seen.
Found a fascinating spreadsheet on Reddit from an e-commerce importer, who sells marble slabs, tracked container prices over five years.
Min: ~$1500 (‘23)
Max: $23k** (‘22)
**Ignoring one container that was $111k
My oversimplified mental model for embedding-based search.
Embedding based search is great when your query can vary dramatically, and the amount of data you have it large enough where text-only isn’t specific enough.

We are up on Product Hunt today to promote our last three months of work!

With remote work, I think a lot about Richard Hamming's points from "You and your research" on working with the "door to your office open" or "door closed".

On Hyman Rickover’s thinking around building the first nuclear submarine.
Rather than thinking about complicated nuclear engineering, figure out the minimum power needed for the propeller, and then work backwards.
Theres an undeniable sci-fi tone to seeing github issue exchanges in multiple languages.
It feels like the future depicted in Star Wars, seeing Obi-wan converse with an r2-droid and a non-english speaking humanoid, with perfect comprehension.
In the 2030s, China and Japan could have more robots produced annually than children born, with humanoid robots supporting their aging populations.
Fertility poor countries augmenting future labor needs with bipedal robots is strangely logical.

I wish there was a way to aggregate the channels I actually care about in one place. Even more awesome would be granular notification controls.
