Time is a flat circle in Thai politics.
And here we are again. 20 years after protesters rallied against PM Thaksin Shinawatra that ended in a military coup; 11 years after many of the same people rallied against Thaksin's sister Yinglick that also ended in another military coup; today thousands of Thais rallied

There's more: plans include a deputy assistant secretary for âDemocracy and Western Valuesâ and an office of ânatural rightsâ that will âground the departmentâs values-based diplomacy in traditional Western conceptions of core freedomsâ. Sounds familiar!
The Trump administrationâs references to âshared values,â a call for partnership in promoting âfreedom,â and a commitment to standing up for âthe peopleâ bear striking similarities to prior U.S. foreign-policy pronouncements, @realosamet argues.

Hereâs @SecRubio invoking âfree speech rightsâ and criticizing foreign governmentsâ domestic policies. classic example of the âvalues-basedâ foreign policy I talk about in my @ForeignPolicy piece below
Excited to share my new piece just out in @ForeignPolicy:. We keep hearing Trumpâs foreign policy abandoned âvaluesâ for raw interests. But thatâs not quite right. It still talks about âfreedomâ and âvaluesâ - just repurposed to serve a new agenda. 𧾠(Gift link in next tweet)

Well this really drives my point home. Just hours after @ForeignPolicy published piece highlighting the ânew values-based foreign policyâ, the @StateDept puts out this. The rhetoric of values persists and is repurposed, even as we assume itâs all transactional âdealsâ

Excited to see this out in @ForeignPolicy today. We tend to think Trumpâs foreign policy is purely transactional. But the rhetoric of âfreedomâ and âshared valuesâ hasnât gone away. Itâs just been redirected toward a very different agenda. đ.
