🚨 Excited to share new work just published in @AJPS_Editor! I look at opposition coalitions and electoral performance in authoritarian regimes—and show how near-victories can create problems for both oppositions and democratic prospects. Brief 🧵 on the findings; link below

And here we are again. 20 years after protesters rallied against PM Thaksin Shinawatra that ended in a military coup; 11 years after many of the same people rallied against Thaksin's sister Yinglick that also ended in another military coup; today thousands of Thais rallied

I’d wager few on the left have much empathy for Elon, so I think this statement is incorrect.

There's more: plans include a deputy assistant secretary for “Democracy and Western Values” and an office of “natural rights” that will “ground the department’s values-based diplomacy in traditional Western conceptions of core freedoms”. Sounds familiar!

The Trump administration’s references to “shared values,” a call for partnership in promoting “freedom,” and a commitment to standing up for “the people” bear striking similarities to prior U.S. foreign-policy pronouncements, @realosamet argues.

New details on the Trump admin's plan to gut the State Dept's democracy and human rights bureau (DRL). 80 percent staffing cut, but also "calls for the creation of new positions that reflect the admin’s cultural lurch to the right in foreign policy".

Here’s @SecRubio invoking “free speech rights” and criticizing foreign governments’ domestic policies. classic example of the “values-based” foreign policy I talk about in my @ForeignPolicy piece below

Excited to share my new piece just out in @ForeignPolicy:. We keep hearing Trump’s foreign policy abandoned “values” for raw interests. But that’s not quite right. It still talks about “freedom” and “values” - just repurposed to serve a new agenda. 🧵 (Gift link in next tweet)

Well this really drives my point home. Just hours after @ForeignPolicy published piece highlighting the “new values-based foreign policy”, the @StateDept puts out this. The rhetoric of values persists and is repurposed, even as we assume it’s all transactional “deals”

Excited to see this out in @ForeignPolicy today. We tend to think Trump’s foreign policy is purely transactional. But the rhetoric of “freedom” and “shared values” hasn’t gone away. It’s just been redirected toward a very different agenda. 👇.

Ultimately, you can’t fully understand the Trump administration’s foreign policy unless you see how deeply it still relies on the rhetoric of *values*.

So no, Trump’s foreign policy isn’t just “America First” in a narrow, transactional sense. It’s pushing a new moral order. One that just can’t quit the language of freedom and shared values.

The new approach is unapologetically moralistic. Often more so than the traditional "values-based" foreign policy we're used to. It’s willing to intervene, name enemies, and define right and wrong across borders. Just ask Germany, South Africa, or the UK.

To be clear: this isn’t the only driver of Trump-era foreign policy. Plenty of decisions are still shaped by personal loyalty or economic interests. But this moral framing shows up more than many observers acknowledge - and it matters.

You can see the shift in practice:.🇿🇦 Aid cut to South Africa over land reform.✈️ White South Africans prioritized for resettlement.❌ Criticism of EU privacy regulations and UK hate speech laws. All justified using language about "rights violations", "genocide," etc.

The new values include:. - Free speech absolutism. - Anti-"woke" conservatism. - Defense of “Western civilization”. It’s not the end of values in U.S. foreign policy. It’s a pivot to new ones while relying on familiar tropes. Echoing a "values-based" foreign policy of old.

At the Munich Security Conference in Feb, VP @JDVance accused Europe of betraying democratic values. @SecRubio slammed European speech laws as tyranny. Trump allies called the AfD victims of censorship. This isn’t amoral deal-making. It’s a remapped moral vision.
