It’s finally here. Every day this week our major @GuardianAus investigative podcast series Australia v The climate. Part 1: Kyoto.. government insiders tell us how Australia struck a special deal that made “meeting and beating” targets easy.

This is the story of how Australia’s behaviour across decades has made it a climate change outcast. In the first episode we hear how Australia managed to increase its emissions under a climate deal...

On Monday, The Australian's p1 lead story said mining giant Glencore had "urged the Albanese government to slow down the transition from coal to renewables" But Glencore told me its position was "the transition should NOT be slowed" Exclusive story here.
theguardian.com
Exclusive: Glencore says it did not call on federal government to slow shift from coal to renewables, contradicting News Corp paper’s front-page quotation

Here’s the latest Temperature Check column, looking at the new Sky News Aus documentary “The Real Cost of Net Zero”, plus, coal is apparently a“transition fuel” now.

Chris Uhlmann says power costs are soaring while renewables are falling short, but do the pair have anything in common?

What Smith didn't say, is the solar and battery have saved $1.5m in diesel costs in two years. Some 709,000 less litres of diesel have been burned on the island since the system went in, according to a report from ARENA.

But have costs gone up? I asked the LHI board, and they said electricity charges have risen by only 10% between 2021 and 2024. Here's a statement from an LHI Board spokesperson.

He said: "What has now come out is they are now paying 90c a kwh for their electricity." But electricity charges on the island are as low as 26c/kwh. Here's the island's charge list.

Too late to include in the column, but Dick Smith claimed that on Lord Howe island, people were paying 90c kw/h for electricity after solar and a battery were installed. This compared with 25c in Sydney. 1/n

Two years ago @algore was congratulating Queensland for a plan to get off coal. Now climate advocates are worried a state election could halt the momentum.

The Liberal National party’s reluctance to say how it would meet the state’s emissions reduction targets while backing coal-fired power has become an election issue

We went to see how a Gondwanan rainforest that burned in Black Summer five years ago was “recovering”. These trees with ancient lineages are still dying.

Rainforest trees at Nightcap national park have not evolved to deal with bushfires, leaving the landscape vulnerable for years after major burns

I debated whether to share this. I did apologize on the air. But I invite you to read my introspection on @BulletinAtomic of how extreme weather 📈 driven by global warming has changed me. Frankly, YOU should be shaken too, and demand #ClimateActionNow.

Temperature Check column is out. How conservatives got outraged by a call to eat less red meat that was never actually made. Plus, checking a claim net zero will mean more expensive energy.
theguardian.com
Climate Change Authority’s report didn’t even contain a recommendations section, let alone a command to eat less red meat
