On Monday, The Australian's p1 lead story said mining giant Glencore had "urged the Albanese government to slow down the transition from coal to renewables" But Glencore told me its position was "the transition should NOT be slowed" Exclusive story here.

Here’s the latest Temperature Check column, looking at the new Sky News Aus documentary “The Real Cost of Net Zero”, plus, coal is apparently a“transition fuel” now.

What Smith didn't say, is the solar and battery have saved $1.5m in diesel costs in two years. Some 709,000 less litres of diesel have been burned on the island since the system went in, according to a report from ARENA.

But have costs gone up? I asked the LHI board, and they said electricity charges have risen by only 10% between 2021 and 2024. Here's a statement from an LHI Board spokesperson.

He said: "What has now come out is they are now paying 90c a kwh for their electricity." But electricity charges on the island are as low as 26c/kwh. Here's the island's charge list.

Too late to include in the column, but Dick Smith claimed that on Lord Howe island, people were paying 90c kw/h for electricity after solar and a battery were installed. This compared with 25c in Sydney. 1/n

Two years ago @algore was congratulating Queensland for a plan to get off coal. Now climate advocates are worried a state election could halt the momentum.
