you know, I think robbing trains was just Chris Evans's midlife crisis (pejorative).

Who lied more, the train robbers or the lawmen who caught them? yes.

However, I'm heavily biased by the fact that everyone in the Sontag/Evans story lied like it was their godgiven life purpose handed down from on high.

Sometimes I think we should just give up the pretense of a nonfiction section.

Last week, I talked about how well (or not) RDR2 represents Black people quantitatively. This week, a qualitative analysis: how well do Dan Houser, Michael Unsworth, and Rupert Humphries write about the Black experience?

Meant to post about John Sontag on the anniversary of his death (3 July); ironically, my shoulder hurt so much that I forgot.

It's extremely sad how people do phenomenal work that doesn't get the credit it deserves.

One thing I'm learning about studying outlaws is that you do NOT want a bestseller. You want something a university press or a historical society published. Often this will be out of print.

Just in case anyone else would find it useful or interesting, here's the demographic data for characters in RDR2 (reposting because twt's weird about replies now):

And here's the data I compiled on the characters in RDR2. Quite a lot of info here; if you're an academic and know anyone who might find it useful, do pass it on.

So much of what's happening in the U.S. right now is a refusal to face history with honesty. Let's take a closer look at the idea that RDR2 is fairly historically accurate. Who's allowed to exist in the game, and who's cut out? Who gets a voice? A name?

Doing more research and just came across the full-ass name "Leonard Summers" in a record that seems totally unrelated to anything. No idea what to do with that lol.

No update today -- I'm still dealing with an injured neck/shoulder, so everything is taking longer. I'll be back next week!.

Still researching . still finding more allusions . attempting to tear myself away so I can work on Wednesday's totally unrelated, but still important, essay.

That's somewhat to do with locality, but I'm confident way more people know who Lizzie Borden is than Evans and Sontag, now.

I'm still researching these guys, and it's interesting to see how often they were getting covered before the Lizzie Borden trial in the papers.

Be a real outlaw and commit some Friday-afternoon wage theft!! Instead of whatever your boss wants you to do, read about the train-robbing mountain men who inspired RDR2:
