On this day in 1812, the Battle of Queenston Heights was fought. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the British and Canadian troops, along with their Mohawk allies, defeated the American invaders. Major General Isaac Brock was killed in the battle.

Étonnement, les Flyers de l’ARC restent invaincus, battant toutes les autres équipes sauf 1 match nul contre la Tchécoslovaquie, grande favorite. Les 2 équipes terminent avec un même nombre de victoires, mais les Flyers sont déclarés gagnants, avantagés par la différence de buts.

L’équipe originale de 13 joueurs provenait des bases de l’ARC partout au Canada. Après 2 matchs d’exhibition perdus, les médias demandent à l’équipe de se retirer du tournoi. Toutefois, des ajouts de dernière minute furent apportés à l’équipe avant de partir pour l’Europe.

Au départ, le Canada n’avait pas l’intention d’envoyer une équipe aux Jeux olympiques de 1948. C’est le Dr A. Gardner « Sandy » Watson, chef d’escadron, qui a convaincu l’Association canadienne de hockey amateur qu’il pouvait former une équipe composée d’aviateurs.

In 2008, the RCAF Flyers were inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.

Surprising more than a few, the RCAF Flyers went undefeated. They beat all teams they played except for a tie against the heavily favoured Czechoslovakians. Both teams finished with the same record, but the Flyers were declared the winners as they had a higher goal-average win.

The original 13-member team came from RCAF bases across Canada. After losing both exhibition games, many in the media called for the team to withdraw from the tournament. Instead, a few last-minute additions to the team were made before they left for Europe.
