R.A.P. Ferreira’s view on the importance of originality, not just in music… but in life itself
In Ep. 135 of The Rap Music Plug Podcast
👇🏽
Flying Lotus’ 2008-2014 run was unthinkably great
He charted new ground with his special blend of hip-hop and electronic music
He’s the master of the instrumental album… he knew *exactly* how to structure his songs for this format
Truly one of the best to ever do it 🐐
@kendricklamar
Notice how the brown-skinned wall has those weird white spots on it
Well that’s actually a metaphor for how whiteness infects black spaces
Same goes for the white shirts that are LITERALLY covering their black skin
Thereby assimilating Kendrick and the girl into white culture
The GZA was wildly impressive live
As many artists do live, he omitted the last words of certain bars
BUT, he turned that into a whole new style
Hitting different pockets with the extra pauses… with a cool conversational spin
And the live instrumentation was terrific 🙏🏽
🚨billy woods will be joining The Rap Music Plug Podcast for an interview🚨
Discussing his legacy, and that of Backwoodz
His writing style, how he pieces together his stellar albums
As well as the brand new Kenny Segal collab LP, Maps
… and more!
Tune in May 10 🎙️
Loving what I’m hearing from this new MIKE album so far
The groove and pocket he catches on Set the Mood is freaking amazing, so fun 🙏🏽
Both as a rapper and producer, MIKE’s consistent greatness should be studied
FM! is one of the most underrated projects of the past decade
It’s absolutely electric
Lethal songwriting, and Kenny Beats was in his bag 🔥🔥
This album is the prototypical lightning in a bottle type beat
Essexdogs still made one of the craziest beats I’ve ever heard from the 2010s
Anyone know if this producer released any other music?
Can’t find anything under this name anywhere…
“My taxes pay police brutality settlements”
What a brutal line DANG
Maps is as expected… brilliant
No filler, razor sharp lyrics
With production that is remarkably consistent, yet filled with musical flourishes that keep things fresh
What are your initial thoughts on Maps?
Brother said he’d put Eminem production over The Alchemist’s 😭
This should put you on a watchlist
I don’t know what kind of list, but you gotta be more likely to do some bad stuff if you believe this
Disturbing
I’m happy that Al didn’t make beats that were too quiet and discrete w/ MIKE & Wiki
The beats on Faith is a Rock are a nice blend of drums and soft samples
With a lush aesthetic that fits the lyrical styles of the two MCs
Really liking this LP so far
How you feeling about it?
billy woods discusses the unmoored nature of Maps, in contrast to Hiding Places
And how it tells the story of a person who is “everywhere and nowhere at the same time”

I’ll always love this song for the powerful Rome Streetz verse
And the beautiful piano sample that feels so naturally melancholic and contemplative
That Rome Streetz Griselda album is gonna be a problem…
Rappers really gotta stop rapping over their own vocals when performing live
It’s just the biggest buzzkill
I didn’t pay to see you make hand gestures and faces at the crowd as I listen to the mp3 of your song
Just terrible
One of the smoothest examples of someone bodying a beat in rap
In love with the soft swing of the beat
Marci finds the perfect pocket
There’s no way I’ve played this song any less than 100 times
The 🐈 is officially out of the bag
woods x Kenny Segal album, titled Maps… dropping May 6 👀👀
Props to
@gardenerjams
for sharing this pertinent information
Nicholas Craven hate is such quintessential underground head nonsense
Dude does nothing but show love and respect for hip-hop
Yet people are mad because, what… people love his beats while you don’t
Ok, and?? Just cus you don’t love something, doesn’t mean you gotta hate 🤦🏽♂️
The Cold Vein has one of my absolute favourite instrumental intros
It’s so dramatic
And sets the tone for what will be one of the most groundbreaking rap albums of all-time
@cory_shoff
I like Meg, she seems like a genuine person
But I really don’t like how her team has managed her career
No matter how much money and “exposure” is at stake
I would never advise an artist to appear on the damn Clinton’s docuseries 🤮
Pink Siifu is on his D’Angelo tip on this new B. Cool-Aid album
Amazed with how impressionistic and deep the soul is on this LP
Ahwlee’s beats evolve so seamlessly, they flow like water
Leather Blvd. is the antithesis to rigidity… it’s music at its freest
AOTY contender 🙏🏽🙏🏽
“Name your opps without saying a system, specificity matters”
This is the most immediately gratifying Armand Hammer LP yet
The beats have major GROOVE
The spirit of collaboration is beautiful
And the duo’s chemistry has never been so natural
How you feel about WBDTS so far??
Looks like we’re indeed getting a MIKE x Tony Seltzer project on Mar 6 🙏🏽
In the vid in this thread, there’s mention of Pinball dropping this Wed
Also, Tony mentioned in my interview with him in Jan
That he had a big-time project that he couldn’t speak on
I think this is it
I don’t think I ever gave Honor it’s proper love
I always liked it a lot… but goddamn is it great
Some very grand instrumentals, and vivid lyricism as per usual from Ka

E L U C I D over Child Actor beats >>
Armand Hammer x Cavalier show was incredible, we’re witnessing history in the making
Was also cool that so many RMPP fans came up to me and showed love about the pod!!
That’s never happened as often as it did last night… very affirming 🙏🏽
Phonte has my current feature of the year
I really haven’t heard something so sublime in quite some time
Took my breath away…
Both in its brutally honest subject matter
And amazing technical prowess
Phonte is a living legend 🙌🏽
Wiki delivered one of the best live rapping performances I’ve ever seen
Last night was one of those shows that puts you in a good mood that lasts for days
Everyone there, from the crowd to the performers
Were all on the same page to do one thing… enjoy this hip-hop s*** 🫡
The Armand Hammer interview hit 1K views on YouTube last night!
But I’m even more happy reading all the kind messages I’ve received since this dropped
So many AH fans seemed to appreciate the insight and flow of the convo
/ were sending me love personally
Very thankful 🙏🏽
The opening tracks of the new
@AesopRockWins
is a truly nutso run
Aesop delivered some very impressive narratives on this album
Beats are lively, and among the best I’ve heard him produce
ITS is already shaping up to be in my top 3-5 Aesop albums on first few listens… 👀
RIP Gift of Gab, wow this is so sad
His name says it all… he had a true gift
He had a control over words and rhythm, that almost no one could match
Who was actually able to create meaningful and highly enjoyable albums too
Blazing Arrow is an all-time favourite for me 🙏🏽
After 3-4 listens
It’s the album I was hoping Q would make at this stage of his career
Some mature reflective subject matter
Solid blend of high energy tracks and more creative risk-taking
And yet - I don’t really like it a lot :/
On paper, I should love this… but I do not
Once again, Navy Blue’s music came to the rescue last night
Helped me stay grounded while confronting some difficult old memories
Ways of Knowing is growing on me with every listen… it’s so calming
What are your early thoughts on the album so far?
YO I’m 50 YouTube subscribers away from being able to monetize this b****
So if you haven’t already, toss me a sub on the YT channel!!
Link in the next tweet below👇🏽
This new RiTchie album is impressing the hell out of me 🙏🏽
At its best, it displays some of the most forward-thinking hip-hop I’ve heard all year
While still feeling impeccably listenable too
Case in point, Looping
Even though the music is experimental, it’s still catchy too!
Evidence and Navy Blue are joining forces on a track on this upcoming Unlearning Vol. 1 album…
It’s called “Pray with an A”
The amount of peace we will attain from this song mannn 🙏🏽🙏🏽
“I pick the best beats”
@elucidwho
joined the show and detailed his role as the sound architect for Armand Hammer
Alongside his longtime partner
@BackwoodzHipHop

MIKE put on a fantastic show last night
Favourite part of it was that the crowd kept singing along to the little vocal samples within the beats
Really shows how dedicated the fan base is
Also, we need a full MIKE x GAWD album 🙏🏽
“I would look at this album like a short story collection”
Armand Hammer illustrate how WBDTS didn’t have an overarching theme
And more so a sentiment that branched out in different ways “like veins in a leaf”
In Ep. 154 of The Rap Music Plug Podcast

Sneak peek of track 7 from the upcoming Armand Hammer album 👀
“Every word out my mouth drag my people backwards”
I know this isn’t a CDQ clip… but I think it’s safe to say that this song is gonna be pretty good
August Fanon slayed this beat jesus, what a legend 🔥🔥🔥
BREAKING: The Philadelphia 76ers are trading James Harden and PJ Tucker to the Los Angeles Clippers for Nicolas Batum, Marcus Morris, Robert Covington and KJ Martin, and draft picks, sources tell
@TheAthletic
@Stadium
.
Still can’t get over how much of a body Castro caught on Wishing Bad 😮💨
Haram was such a MOMENT
My anticipation for this new Armand Hammer album is growing by the minute…
If you wanted to make an argument for Soundpieces having the best Madlib production ever…
You’d have a *very* strong argument
That element of west coast groove was so prominent in his earlier work
How it blends with his classic nutty, dirty production stylings is so nice 😮💨
Never heard woods go acapella like this before
Maps show last night with Kenny Segal and PremRock was amazing
Set list was killer 🔥
Make sure you get those Armand Hammer concert tickets while they still last…
I’m gonna say something that may upset many…
The GAT is great, one of my favourite Mach projects
But the reverence that it receives as this untouchable, obvious best Mach record has never made sense to me
I love it but it’s not my favourite Mach, and barely is in my Top 5 👀
Gold Crossbow is a rapping clinic
As is much of Marciology
Marci’s production is terrific, so I love that he primarily handled the beats
Sound and raps are rugged, but chiseled down to only its essential elements
Another A1 addition to one of the greatest rap discogs ever 🙏🏽
I have 2 specific thoughts about Birdsong
1. That “first time you saw the word n***** in a book, how it danced on the page” bar is SO unsettling
This song feels so beautifully tense
In preparation for this interview with woods
Reply with a 280 character or less opinion on why you love billy woods’ music
The interesting ones may be included in a conversation with the man himself 👀
Interview drops May 10th 🎙️
@FDsignifier
I’m South Asian, and host a hip-hop show
I’m a big fan of your stuff!!
And am plugged into this topic, as well as some of the growing trends related masculinity
Would love to contribute!
Impressed with this new MIKE x Tony Seltzer album
I appreciate how Tony made this short project feel complete with a strong tone-setting intro
And dramatic strings in the outro
MIKE proves his versatility is truly unparalleled… he was slidin all over this thing 🔥
With YouTube views + podcast downloads combined
This woods interview is the most viewed thing ever on the show…
And it’s been out one single day 😭
Appreciate all the love and support this had received
More good stuff from the show coming your way very soon!!
Quelle and Chris Keys are an undefeated combination on the boards
This beat is tough as 💅🏽
Kassa Overall lent some additional work on the beat too… his fingerprints are all over Quaranta
There’s a lively organic feel to this album that is a nice change of pace for Danny
GUMBO is such a fantastic album, has aged beautifully
@PinkSiifu
manages to rock like 17 different styles, and pulls it off effortlessly
Some of these more trappy jams on the album are so damn catchy 🔥
@scoop_pxn
@fakeshoredrive
Thank you for saying this LOL
People really think it means the beat, mixing and mastering, and the lyrics were all laid down in 120 minutes 😂

Mick Jenkins is *easily* one of the best live rap performers I’ve ever seen
The raps were perfect, the sound was flawless (shoutout
@SLLIME64
on the boards)
The live drums were beautifully mixed
Great great show 🙌🏽
SUPREME BLIENTELE is incredible
The best Westside album imo
Top to bottom it is just impeccably produced, blending the grit and luxury perfectly
A1 features, and the best rapping of Gunn’s career
@TaylerUSA
Please take this video off of Twitter
I probably don’t agree with anything this person believed in politically
But I shouldn’t have been able to see someone dead bleeding out in 1080p
My god that made me sick, I was not expecting that
“For every Jack Harlow it’s a white boy who didn’t make it
And works in crypto and intellectual property” 😭😭😭
One of the funniest lines I’ve heard in 2023
@BlockheadNYC
killed this new album, many great features like woods here
FYI, Nov 29 for the Blockhead interview!!
“Hard truths like cheesecake is a pie”
My mind is blown rn
Didn’t know woods was a cheesecake truther, but he’s actually correct about this wow
This revelation is becoming my new small talk topic lol
I already got someone on board last night
Danny Brown was a machine last night
Rapped his songs effortlessly, vocal inflections and all
It also reminded me how ridiculous his catalog is
Living legend 🙏🏽
HeadSpace is undeniably one of the best albums of 2023
I’m immensely impressed with the honest lyricism
Razor sharp songwriting, and impeccably tight production
H31R is the present and the future 🙌🏽
The experimental and more noisy sound that has been rumoured on this new Armand Hammer album…
Is absolutely felt on this new single!!
DJ Haram killed this… really pushes woods and E L U C I D to some interesting places
On a scale of 8-10, how pumped are you for this LP?! 😎
We NEED a Boldy James x Preservation album
I feel that duo cook something up that could top Manger on McNichols
Preservation’s sound is a great fit for Boldy, which could also push him into more unconventional territory
And yield some great results!!
With every industry guy who shares this same kind of remark…
The key disclaimer to add is that they’re talking about the mainstream ONLY
Because it would be downright embarrassing to say this to anyone who puts in an ounce of effort to find good music elsewhere
Where is the inspiration? Where are the artist?? This thing is shifting. It’s a dark cloud looming over the business. Who is the last artist that really spoke to you??
