The 228 agencies covered were mostly in the South, and comparing them to contemporary counterparts we see a massive decline in the use of lethal force, and also in the rate at which officers themselves were killed.

The data was collected by the sociologist Arthur Raper, who wrote directly to the agencies; it was stored on microfilm at the Schomburg Center, scanned and digitized in preparation for a conference commemorating 75th anniversary of Myrdal's book 2/n.
