I utterly loved writing this part-factual part-fictionalized piece on being a teen and relating to Tamil film songs. Link:

I was determined to fall in love. But there was a slight problem affecting my earnest motive. I wasn’t sure whom to fall in love with.

As you can see, the film gently but firmly argues that fulfillment lies in consensual dynamics, not in coercion. You may dominate or you may submit, but only if everyone involved is on the same page. Thank you. (4/4)

Neelambari, on the other hand, makes the fatal mistake of trying to forcibly convert a dom into a sub. And predictably, her entire project collapses. (3/4)

Both Padayappa and Neelambari are doms in search of the right sub. Padayappa, being the pragmatic fellow that he is, finds a consenting sub in Soundarya’s Vasundhara and settles into a mutually agreeable arrangement. (2/4)

'Padayappa' and BDSM - A thread. K. S. Ravikumar’s Padayappa (1999) was ahead of its time because, at heart, it functions as a surprisingly coherent primer on BDSM dynamics. (1/4)

On Savukku Shankar's arrest - A thread. It is a clear exaggeration to describe Savukku Shankar as a journalist, a whistleblower, or even a YouTuber in the conventional sense. Some of his early interventions might have contained elements of whistle-blowing. 1/9

The public need not be anxious about Savukku Shankar’s arrest or his power-brokering career. That is, quite frankly, his business and not ours. 9/9

They are conflicts between his clients and those his clients want him to attack. Today, he may align himself with the AIADMK or the BJP but tomorrow, he could just as easily work for the DMK if that serves him better. 8/9

Taken as a whole, their interventions tend to cause more public harm than produce any meaningful civic value. Crucially, Savukku Shankar’s current troubles are not political persecution in any principled sense. 7/9

Power brokers like Savukku Shankar operate without any consistent moral or ethical compass. They are perfectly capable of projecting the more dangerous power centre as virtuous, simply because it aligns better with their immediate interests. 6/9

When competing power centres leak damaging information about one another, some degree of transparency and accountability can emerge as a by-product. But the cost of this model is far greater. 5/9

Shankar, in turn, monetises and amplifies these leaks, functioning less as an exposer of power and more as an intermediary within it. There may be a incidental public benefit to this arrangement. 4/9

Powerful politicians, influential business figures, and even individuals within the state’s administrative and police machinery feed him resources and selective leaks about rival power centres. They do so because it benefits them. 3/9

But over time, he has unmistakably repositioned himself as a power broker, someone adept at crafting media narratives that serve particular interests. 2/9

There is no doubt that Selvamani Selvaraj’s Kaantha is an enormously ambitious film. Set in the film studios of 1950s Madras, it immediately offers a delicious premise: a master filmmaker, a superstar, a spiralling ego clash, and a murder lurking in the shadows. @rajamanirajesh

And Mahesh Babu was cast only because it’s widely believed that he and Modi follow the same skin-care routine!😒 (3/3)

Varanasi refers to his MP constituency, and globe-trotting is what he’s been diligently doing for the last 11 years. The last shot of Mahesh Babu on a bull is a nod to the cow politics that has kept Modi’s government running all this while. (2/3)

Some people on the internet seem to be wondering why SS Rajamouli's film is now called 'Varanasi' when it was earlier promoted as #Globetrotter. But that’s because the film is actually a satire on Narendra Modi. (1/3)

It’s honestly disappointing that not a single major media house has stepped up with the obvious think-piece: “10 Things Bihar’s Tejashwi Yadav Can Learn from New York’s Zohran Mamdani.” Truly, journalism is slipping.😏
