Ten years ago, when Laura and her mom Thida set out to write their first song together in Khmer, it was just for fun. Little did they know they were helping to light the spark for a Cambodian pop music revolution. My story here on @NPRWeekend:

Laura Mam is Cambodian American, and her mother, Thida Buth, is a Khmer Rouge survivor. They're fostering the pop music movement in Cambodia that was wiped out almost 40 years ago.

If you’re looking to learn more about how people are getting away with buying/trading/owning exotic and endangered wild animals read this from @geraldrflynn

Also, and maybe most importantly, new legislation in Cambodia makes wild animal ownership, breeding, and hunting a murky grey area, meaning there's probably little that animal trafficking authorities can do to stop this kind of behavior by the rich and powerful

I'm told that these animals are extremely difficult to keep in captivity due to their highly specialized diet, so it's unlikely this baby will survive. It's dressed in a hat, shirt and diaper, and in these videos it's treated like a plaything.

This is Preap Sovath, a famous Cambodian singer who has closely aligned himself with the ruling party. In this video posted to his Instagram he's holding an infant red-shanked douc. These animals are critically endangered. It's likely this baby was stolen from its mother 1/?

Has news of Thais, Indians, Chinese, Indonesians, Malaysians, Taiwanese, etc. also taken them by storm?
In the past week, news of South Koreans allegedly being detained for illegal work in Cambodia has taken the public by storm, prompting an abrupt investigation and denials from the Cambodian authorities. https://t.co/AxQqh2WJy2

This is such sad news. Dr. Ray was one of the most generous and kindest academics I have ever worked with. He truly cared for the people he mentored and supported. He will be sorely missed
May you rest in peace, Dr @RRLeos. You will be sorely missed by your loved ones, students, and whoever fortunate enough to know or work with you. Your passing is a great loss of everyone in Cambodia's academic community.

Good piece in @cambojanews - instead of a peer-run/industry-led oversight body, #Cambodia's Ministry of Information rushed through a wildly unpopular *legally binding* press charter that seems more intent on silencing critics than regulating the press. https://t.co/WJ4xlUzyJ4

The level to which Cambodia’s government institutions both acknowledge the severity of the scam problem and completely deny it’s existence is so surreal and baffling
Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism rejected the report by Korean Public Broadcasting regarding the alleged detention, forced labor, and threats against Korean citizens in Cambodia.

It's a relief to see Mech Dara released on bail after 3 weeks. Being out on bail is not being free. The #Cambodian government must drop any remaining charges against @MechDara1 and stop using vague charges like incitement to silence the press
Mech Dara, a journalist, was released on bail from Kandal provincial prison on Thursday at 12 noon, after his apology last night to Senate president Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet. (CamboJA/Pring Samrang)

I’m away from PP starting today but this was the happiest news to land to. If there is real justice and real press freedom in Cambodia, all charges against Dara will be dropped and he can keep doing his important work

Quite a great news that the ‘lone wolf’ is out on bail. He belongs nowhere near prison. His works hugely benefit Cambodia. Dara that I know never have any ill intent to destabilise his country or harm public security. Hoping for his acquittal from the charge against him.

Relieved to see @MechDara1 released from prison today after more than three weeks of unjust detention. Hopefully Cambodian authorities will also drop the charges against him, but for now it's great to see him freed on bail #PressFreedom #FreeMechDara #JournalismIsNotACrime

“Important strategic objectives” is a crazy way to say “genocide”
Israel has achieved important strategic objectives to ensure that October 7th can never happen again. Now is the time to end the war, get the hostages home, and chart a new path forward that enables the Palestinian people to rebuild their lives.
