"I was expecting it to be more theoretical, and not just a quantum mechanics course (which I would never do)" One student's feedback for "Quantum Physics 2".... 🧐

We had fun arguing about the prospects of near-term quantum computing in Lapland/Oxford In https://t.co/O5pDQfIFok we frame our (reasonably converged) conclusions around common 'myths' concerning error mitigation, VQAs and resource estimates. Feedback/discussion welcomed!

To reach some consensus about the prospects of near-term (nisq and early ft) quantum computing, we had a 3-day discussion event (“Quantum Now”) in Lapland with both optimists and pessimists. This continued at SeeQA 2024 in Oxford. See our conclusions here https://t.co/UaQB9LmTqF

Submit to our special issue of IOP QS&T! We’re broadly after: 🔎 Careful non-hyped analyses on the state of Variational Quantum Computing (benchmarks, resource analyses etc) & ☀️ Big new (maybe half-baked!) ideas about how to combine quantum and variational components

🖊️ @qZoeHolmes and I are guest-editing a focus issue for @QuantSciTech journal. We want - (Wacky) new ideas for variational algorithms - Honest benchmarks, if you show it don't work, we want it (be thorough) - Studies on classical simulability - Power of data in QML And more!

🚨Question to jumpstart 2025🚨 Will variational quantum algorithms / quantum machine learning provide any form of quantum utility (either exponential/polynomial advantage, in NISQ/FTQC, etc)? 👉Please, elaborate in the comments/provide citations! I really want this discussion!!

A great quote from the recent @skdh video is that "Science is not done by consensus. It's done by argument." Even Susskind agreed with this sentiment here

Nature is great at cooling things but getting a quantum computer to do it is hard. Give us an approx ground state, we present an algorithm that: - Cools that state by an amount proportional to its energy fluctuations - Increases its fidelity with the ground state 🧵👇

In the spirit of friendly academic shit posting... (Or because we lack imagination?) We used another IBM experiment to benchmark our small-angle Pauli propagation alg. This time: arXiv:2404.08053 @QuantumManuel's plot below is for TFI on 127 qubits in a heavy hex topology

Finally, we show some numerical simulations that indicate that both the time complexity and the error guaranteed by the analytical bounds can be outperformed. We demonstrate a quick and accurate simulation of a 127-qubit system that modern quantum computers have issues with.

Out today, our latest paper on the theme of: "offload as much work as possible from NISQ hardware" Here we focus on classically simulating small regions ("patches") of an expectation landscape. Our algorithms/theorems apply to dynamical simulation, VQAs and beyond. 🧵👇

Have you ever wondered how much work can be offloaded from quantum computers when simulating an expectation landscape of a parametrized quantum circuit🤔? In our new work “Efficient quantum-enhanced classical simulation for patches of quantum landscapes” we tackle this question.

Today I achieved an academic milestone: I lectured for 3 hours using a single piece of chalk. Not once did I snap a piece. Nor put it down, forget it, and grab another. Nor drop and stand on it. I started with a fresh stick and ended with a piece smaller than my finger nail.

Same experience here. Made my day 🌞 It's been a busy term, I've felt like I've been distracted by grant writing (i.e. tossing epsilon coins) and letting things slip... So is great to know that at least one thing I'm doing is appreciated 🧡

Pleased to see this one out In what may (or may not) be a personal record it took nearly 5 months from scientific acceptance to get them to accept our .tex file (and not butcher any equations in the proofs) Good work Timo on all the time-consuming editorial changes 💪
