Argentina is one of the most anticipated teams of upcoming WC. They are a unique team, not only with the story but with their game model as well. Let’s start with their high press, which can be in different forms depending on the game state and momentum.

Bayern vs Barca showed us top level individual and collective quality. I don’t think any coaches in Europe, except Xavi, could ask his team to man-mark Bayern in full court, especially in Munich. Barcelona pressed very high and aggressive with their usual 442 structure.

Scaloni’s strategy, for me, was incredibly risky but worked very well. Knowing France would keep 2 defs from the back 4 over Messi, he forced France to mark Alvarez with Varane. This created a huge conflict for Kounde btw Di Maria, who played surprisingly as LW, and Mac Allister.

Here the only things I can see are the extremely passive Utd blocks. 2 duels in 100 secs, maybe 5-6 pressures. It's GW5, you can't just forfeit at 20th min when you concede a goal, especially at home. Utd's performance yesterday was much more than structural mistakes or injuries.

The most striking stats of Spain is press related; PPDA, high turnovers etc. Tbh they don’t have the most structured, physical high press. They regain possession with a very effective and efficient counter-press, thanks to the things they do in possession.

Taking the advantage of the international break, I wanted to take another look at high press structures Man City recently used against different build-up structures. Starting with one of the latest games, vs RBL, at which they used two different high …

This was the moment of the game for me. 1-1, Galatasaray looking for a goal, Gomis was in available position, Akturkoglu could’ve passed, but preferred to shoot. A ST, who didn't receive the pass would’ve yelled at his teammate, but Gomis applauded Kerem and supported him instead

Jon was bang on with this back in Comm Shield game! There can be weaknesses during transition between different subphases of out-of-possession phase. Before Tottenham's 1st goal, we saw a similar story. Arsenal was between their m2m high press and 442 mid-block, and it was…

But there is a between phase - the moment at which you are caught between the high p4p phase and the lower zonal phase. It's my conjecture that this season, we're going to see teams try to manipulate these between moments to cause problems.

Maybe not on the scoreboard but in every phase of the game City overplayed Liverpool. Here are some notes I took for Man City vs Liverpool: Firstly, Liverpool had structural problems against City’s build-ups. With 4-1-4-1, MacAllister was forced to be the intermediate player…

Ferguson's ceiling is so high. He is physically already ready, he has a silky touch, high composure in front of goal, really good link-up play. Tactically very mature as well. Understands different roles De Zerbi requires from the striker. Can be the tip of 2341, or as in today's…

Inter shared the fate of Spaletti's Napoli. Atleti played a very big game. 2nd leg at Metropolitan is one of the toughest challenges a team can take in Europe. Minute by minute you feel the pressure increasing on you with the supporters and Simeone's game plan.

Man City’s build-up against Liverpool was very successful. For sure, Liverpool’s ineffective high press played a role, but here are two important things Man City was significantly better at compared to previous games: 1) Double pivot positioning: Rodri and Stones always tried to…

It is incredible that Busquets has been providing the same quality for 15 years. When Barca plays a Barca system, he pulls the team to a different level. Betis game yesterday was another masterclass, he directed all phases in his subtle elegant way. All-time best supporting actor

It is important to remember Atalanta is the 2nd team after Inter regarding the number of big chances created in Serie A and they came to this game with a very good form. Inter kept them at 0.3 xG is as insane as Inter's unique combinations during build-ups against Atalanta's high…

Really an entertaining game between Chelsea and Man City. Both coaches made so many changes throughout the game, that were all positive and gave their team an edge to have the upper hand. With the high tempo of the game, some of these might be missed. Therefore I am going to try…

Watching City's tactical variations is even more fun as you read Perarnau's latest book, La Evolucion Tactica del Futbol. From V-attacks with 'el falso 9' to WM with 'el delantero toro'. Thanks to Pep, we are sort of traveling within football tactics history with high speed.

Conte's teams are unique in finding solutions at build-ups. Against one of the best high pressing teams, they could impress again w build-ups. They used a 4-2 build-up, and specifically tried moving Robertson to wider areas to create space for Kulusevski. It worked quite well.
