Followed NYC payphones to the bitter end. Time to go beyond. Tracking forensic residue of places where payphones used to be. Mapping but not giving away to culture scrapers. Too much legwork/original research. Filmmakers ask "Where's that payphone residue?" I say FIND IT YOURSELF

Square concrete smear and pipey gasps where a payphone used to be. Today.

"Hi MT. My wife and I were hiking near our home yesterday when we came upon a well-maintained payphone at the Interpretive Center within the Foothills Nature Preserve of Palo Alto. It even had a new phone book inside a plastic PacBell cover. (650) 948-9881. Happy Thanksgiving!"

So dumb. #Sony expected the public to treat its gimmick payphones gently. #readingcomprehension

Over a year since they got rid of the payphones, the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal still has the old gigantic TELEPHONES sign.

Vestiges of the old CITIZENS payphone brand.
I went and documented the last payphones in my area before they were removed in April 2023, they worked until 2022. No coins calls, 1-800 calling cards only @projectpayphone

From 2005. St. George Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Verizon payphones are mounted on a trailer in the middle of the waiting room. The trailer has a flat tire. Looks sad but phone calls worked. Photo by Harvey Silikovitz https://t.co/d8gDkat9LH

People using a payphone on 9/11. I never saw this until now. It was part of the HBO "In Memoriam" documentary I could not bear to watch. "You wanna call your mother?" That is exactly what I was doing at this moment. Eerie. https://t.co/zrWQpohRAM via @internetarchive

Discovered at Sunset Cove Park on Broad Channel, Queens, yesterday. A decrepit NYNEX payphone carcass rig off of which someone tried and failed to pry the coin box cover. #offofwhich #ilovequeensnyc #upwithwhichiwillnotput #payphone

With its prickly keyboard you could make calls & send text/sms messages from this Bell-branded payphone, now owned by WiMacTel. The only USA payphone to allow text/sms (afaik) was Dennis Novick's TCC Teleplex Internet streetphone. Smart City LinkNYC/PHL/NWK isn't smart like that.

Echoes of a Payphone/TTY and a whole bunch of other shit circling around its memory. Queens Plaza today.

In Rosedale today, right across the street from a Link5G monster, I spotted this old NYNEX payphone sign stuffed upside down into a telephone pole.

Every LinkNYC machine I've seen since last week is saying that it's 123º in New York. True or not, REAL FEEL® today was about 80º.
