From my book -- "The shift to algorithmically informed aesthetics moves us away from an appreciation of novelty, aesthetic innovation, or the cultivation of individual voice towards consumer preferences and audience engagement." https://t.co/wG7vZZQpxq

Good read on the need to defend reasonableness in the current age... similar to my view that we're not ready for the age of algorithmic enchantment...

It's fashionable to disparage the Enlightenment. But as the modern world slides into bigotry and superstition it's clear how extraordinary and precious its achievements were. We have to fight for Enlightenment values. https://t.co/6iAHWBkKvk

Silicon Empires is out now in the UK! I'm excited to have it out and hear what people think. There's an enormous amount happening every day in AI, and it's difficult to gain a stable perspective. I wrote the book to try and get some hold on that constant flux. 🧵

In 'You Must Become an Algorithmic Problem', José Marichal examines how our reliance on tech companies trades personal freedom for algorithmic control, warning that this threatens democracy. @profmarichal Listen here:

Halfway through the PBS Henry Kissinger documentary. My takeaway so far is that what's different today compared to the Nixon years is that a fragmented media environment allows you to "hide in plain sight." So you don't need secrecy to achieve realist foreign policy goals.

Good essay... listening to a podcast about Constant's view of the need to merge the "modern view of freedom" of rights based liberalism with the "classical view" of community/solidarity. The big question is to whom we are obligated.....

Hakan Altinay reminds us that political rights entail political duties: "if we had to imagine categories of people who have rights but not responsibilities, only infants and the most absolutist of all rulers would meet the criteria."

We are a culture algorithmically encouraged to "fix" our views of the world and to shut out alternative discourses. This ultimately diminishes us as humans..... My thoughts in @FrontPorchRepub https://t.co/cMmApHMyIn

When the algorithm identifies someone as a “gang member” based on human-generated criteria, the model’s “ground truth,” however flawed, becomes a stand-in for reality.

This reinforces a view I have that we're moving from a reason/reasonableness based discourse space to one based on aesthetics and storytelling... without an editor "evidence" is likely to be used as a storytelling device primarily.

The decline of traditional news websites isn’t great news per se. There is outrageously good stuff being published on Substack but it’s all done without editors. As a writer myself I appreciate how helpful editors are. Journalism is increasingly replaced by opinion pieces. The
