Great day hosting the @EPSRC Energy and Decarbonisation team (and other EPSRC colleagues) @UniStrathclyde @TIC_conferences to discuss our strategies, challenges (lots) and opportunities (lots). Hoping @UKLabour will support us in transforming our ideas into reality!

It was great to attend the @the_DARe_Hub advisory board meeting in London - there and back on the same day by train too :-) Lots of interesting stuff to do and many opportunities between our respective @EPSRC -supported projects, looking at the future of transport and energy.

A brilliant thread from @EngineerLondon
A few minutes ago, Unit 4 turbo-generator at Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station desynced from the GB grid system, marking the END of electricity generation from COAL after 142 years 🇬🇧🙏🏻 @RobBurnett92 and I present a 🪡🧵on the evolution of coal fired power from 1882 to today 1/n

Interesting stuff. It’s going to be a huge challenge, but hope springs eternal.

Listening to a podcast with @Peston. Playing it at 1.5 speed and sounds just about right (still a wee bit slow). It’s good by the way 😃

@EngineerLondon care to comment? It’s dark but I think OHLs must be insulated. Quad with all three phases plus earth bundled.

It was a great honour and pleasure to say a few introductory words at this event. Such exciting technology and a huge part of the solution in meeting our #netzero challenges. Thanks for the invite and I’m sure it will go very well! @EEEStrathclyde @StrathEng

She also mentioned how she is keen to seek funding for more PhDs, which is of course great news. However, actually recruiting the PhD candidates (in many Engineering disciplines) is a challenge that doesn’t seem to be receding.

Enjoying @EPSRC Exec Chair Charlotte Deane talking about strategy and objectives at @TIC_conferences. Discussing future-proofing our STEM workforce, building capability, ensuring we look to “tomorrow” and having amazing case studies to impress gov and public.

Serious question. What’s the value of a PhD in Engineering? Hardly any of our “home” students want to do one now. I know vibrant job market deters, but anything else? I don’t think I’d have done one if I was 21 and had just graduated now instead of (ahem) yeas ago…thoughts?

Enjoyed taking part in this. It’s not an easy thing to address…so many factors (and opinions). Certainly good to get it on the agenda. Check out @IGNITENetPlus for some great initiatives and events.
Really enjoyed the EDI session at @IETevents #DPSP2024. This is a most welcome addition to the agenda. A great panel with insightful views on the matter. There are 118 commissioning engineers in the E&W TO yet only two are female. One due to retire soon. We’ve much to do 💪🏻
